Many centuries ago, cattle breeders had a major problem. How do we differentiate our cattles from that of other breeders? So they came up with an idea by making a mark of their name on the cattle with an hot iron. This mark on the cattle was later called branding. This gave birth to brand and branding. This idea quickly spread to other industries placing your identity on your products or services. Today a company with a strong brand equity and identity can be worth billions, and can sell just about anything their logo is on. Yes my friends, like the cattle breeders branding their cattles to differentiate themselves, you are branded each and every day by the decisions you make. Whether you like it or not, you are the sum total of your decisions. And your decisions differentiate you from others. Why? Because all decisions produce fruits . Either a reward or a consequence. Jesus said, "by their fruits you shall know them. Decisions are essential for progress and the fulfillment of your purpose. Chaos and regrets are the result of bad decisions. Success is a result of good decisons. Yes you will be marked and known by the decisions you have made. So ensure your decisions are in alignment with God’s principles and natural laws. Solomon said, "A good name is to be more desired than great wealth." -US Business History Tuesdays- Continuing our journey through Richard Vague's book, "An illustrated business history of the United States." Last week we looked at the technology race of flight and how other innovators also contributed to its pursuit beyond the Wright brothers. This week we'll shift our lens to the origin of businesses that we know of today. "Charles r. Walgreen began selling food from a small storefront in Chicago in 1901, and his business had expanded to a chain of twenty stores by 1919. It thrived in the 1920s during Prohibition, as his stores were allowed to sell prescription whiskey. His locations started selling malted milkshakes in 1922, which became so popular that the company established its own ice cream manufacturing plants to meet demand." Who would've thought prescription whiskey could be a thing? On the clothing line side, "Leon Leonwood (L.L.) Bean, a hunter and fisherman in Freeport, Maine, founded his company in 1912 to sell a single product: the Maine hunting shoe. He used a new technique to identify his target customers and market: he procured a list of nonresident Maine hunting license holders. He sold his boots through a four-page mail-order catalog and operated his nationwide business out of his brother's basement." This might be the early version of targeted marketing and using public data for it! Coming back to the drinking side of things. "In 1912 Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, began using brown bottles to prevent light from affecting beer quality, and the industry quickly embraced this as a standard practice." Well, now I know why beer bottles are tinted or in this case, colored brown!

(Forced) Gardening day 😅. Working on some vertical pots/fences for the plans so that the chickens can eat them and leave the tomatoes for the humans, lol. As marketers, CX, and comms people, I guess we should all do the same. Right? We protect our people—from customers to employees—with the experiences they need based on their individual context. Turf farm sells grass like never before! John was asked by Australian Lawn Concepts, one of Australia’s larger turf farms, to assist in marketing an oversupply in turf. After spending time with the owner, John was able to deduce that the major target audience for the turf product was Landscapers – as unlike home owners, they purchase turf for numerous homes at a time. John produced an innovative Direct Mail Campaign which featured an offer “too good to refuse” to most thirsty male landscapers! For every purchase of 500 square metres of turf (about one regular home’s worth), the landscaper would receive a free carton of premium Crown Lager beer! John explained “given the capacity of landscapers to order volume turf, we need to provide them with an incentive which rewarded them personally. And then we needed to link the giveaway with a particular volume, so that we would stimulate repeat purchasing and ongoing loyalty”. The Direct Mail Campaign was due to be mailed to 500 landscapers in the region, but after sending 250 of the mailers out, guess what? ALC Turf Farm ran out of turf!! Each summer i like to try to grow tomatoes. In my tiny veggie garden, some years im lazy and i take shortcuts ( read : i dont work the land ), some years im really disciplined, and do it all, on time ( yes, there is a time window that if you miss, failure looms ). This year, i guess due to increased focus on my tomato crop, i mixed old school guidance with new school ( read : youtube gardening wizards ). So … i planted my plants in a double pattern, rather dense format. To my, and everyone’s visiting surprise, the plants are growing faster and arguably happier than ever. Lets see the crop KPIs later in the summer. The obvious parallel to sales now … There are so many ways to close a deal. Through negotiation, strategic positioning or simply relationship based. And more… Absorbing and adapting and most importantly learning and using from all perspectives in a sales team, is the easiest and fastest accelerator to sales succes. Growing up in a fly fishing family, there's one phrase that is beaten into your brain from the moment you're big enough to hold a rod up without smashing to tip into the willows... Match the hatch. This lesson was perhaps best impressed upon me at a very young by an old time river rat who had probably caught more trout than I've ever seen. I was trying to convince this cranky, hook nosed brown trout that the hopper pattern I had tied on was the next best thing to filet mignon this side of the Rockies... but to no avail. The old man politely told me that that was the dumbest idea he'd seen tried in a while. (quite the wordsmith he was) He pointed out that in late April at this elevation, that trout likely hadn't seen a grasshopper in over 6 months, but here I was trying to convince him that today was different. Sure, in just 3 months time that same trout would gobble that faux grasshopper up like I gobble up bacon wrapped shrimp. But today? Not a chance. The same thing gets forgotten by brands all too often. Everyone knows the expression of "Different bait for different fish." Don't offer the mother of 5 teenage boys a deal on a 2 pack of steak, offer her a deal on half an entire steer. But doing only that can leave tons of revenue on the table for your brand. You need to remember that you need different bait for the same fish... at different seasons in their life. Your message, offer, and product selection needs to "make sense." The biggest place brands go wrong with this is in their segmentation. Blasting sales regular campaigns to customers whose recent purchase hasn't even arrived yet, making the same pitch to prospects and brand loyalists alike, and many more. If all you do is ask yourself "does this make sense for _______" you'll be miles ahead of the competition, and your subscribers will love you for it.
