New Leadership Changes at Target announced! Target Corporation has announced key promotions to strengthen its leadership team that will take place right after the 4th of July Holiday. Looks like these strategic moves will place merchandise and AI to help move the company foward and position them for growth. 🔹 Rick Gomez has been promoted to Chief Commercial Officer. Currently serving as Chief Food, Essentials, and Beauty Officer, Gomez will now oversee Target's entire #merchandising business, including apparel, accessories, home, hardlines, and owned brand sourcing and design. He will report directly to CEO Brian Cornell. 🔹 Christina Hennington has been promoted to Chief Strategy and Growth Officer. Previously Chief Growth Officer, Hennington will work closely with Cornell and Target's leadership team to drive the company's growth initiatives, leveraging technology and generative AI to enhance operations. She will continue to report to Cornell. 🔹 Lisa Roath currently Chief Marketing Officer, will become Chief Merchandising Officer of Food, Essentials, and Beauty in early 2025, while Target searches for her successor. The retail shelf is a valuable, in-demand, high-traffic piece of REAL ESTATE. Don’t expect it to be more than that. I just wrapped with an industry peer who is experiencing challenges with her product not selling after landing in a highly-coveted retail space. She reached the goal of getting on the shelf…. then was shocked when it just sat there. It was clear two minutes into the conversation she had very unrealistic expectations of what the retailer would be doing for her. Retailers might love your product - they wouldn’t put it on the shelf if they didn’t think it provided tremendous consumer value. And Retailers will sometimes highlight your product and feature it in promotions. All good things. 🔥 But it is OUR JOB as the Food Brand to drive consumers into stores, to point them toward that very precious “real estate” where our products are stocked, and to give that consumer every reason to trust and buy our brand over the competition. 🔥 It is OUR JOB to maintain a constant flow of new consumers rushing into those stores to get our offerings. 🔥 It is OUR JOB to merchandise shelves to make sure they are stocked and beautiful and products are prospering where they are planted. 🔥 It is OUR JOB to consistently and frequently run in-store demo events to get shoppers excited to buy. 🔥 And it is OUR JOB to be an amazing partner to those Retailers who trust us with their valuable shelf “real estate” and to consistently show up for them. ➡️ Bottom line: Getting on the right retailer shelf is a privilege. My comments on Macy's captured in the latest article by Jordyn Holman at The New York Times. Leadership changes are a start but bringing Tony Spring into the c-suite is not going to solve all of Macy’s challenges. A few key priorities that should be top of mind for Macy’s: 📌Capturing Gen Z shoppers 📌More smaller store formats 📌A hyper localized and curated product mix 📌Rethinking C and D stores 📌Translating merch strategies IN stores Finally, there must be a strategic focus on the customer experience on and offline. You'd think working in category, when popping into a supermarket at afternoon tea time & wanting a cheeky little snack, I'd know where to find it. 3 attempts later... 👀 Let's talk merchandising, visibility, and planograms today!! 👀 This is the first time I have entered this Store since pre-COVID and my first impression was: Wow 😮 This Store is spacious, +12 ft grand displays everywhere, nicely faced end caps, and lots and lots of #BCLocal flags / signs / danglers everywhere!! ❤️ Then I went to the #Snack aisle🍿 and something stood out immediately that caught my attention 👀 Brands pay for listing fees, they pay for planograms, and they pay for everything you can think of 🥲 Adjusting the shelves so products are being merchandised properly w clear visibility is the #1 rule (I will never forget the 2-finger rule Doran Murphy ✌️) for merchandising. Planning for planograms is an extremely difficult task 👩💻 I applaud to all those who do this!! ❓How would you change this 🍿 rack so all products are visible❓Would you remove a shelf and readjust it?? But then that might mean less SKUs / less facings, and maybe "bleeding" onto the shelf next to it 🤔 #merchandising #visibility #planograms
