Thinking Outside the Cubicle - How Verkada's 3-3-3 Program helps their team grow and their bottom line: Filip Kaliszan is the Co-Founder and CEO of Verkada - a company that builds cloud-based security and operating systems. He was on the Logan Bartlett podcast 2 weeks ago and talked about Verkada's 3-3-3 program for building culture (which was developed by Verkada CFO Kameron Rezai). The premise: - After 3pm - 3+ employees can go out for drinks or dinner - And expense the company up to $30/person Employees are encouraged to do this every 1-2 weeks, and the only requirement is to post a picture of it in the company's 3-3-3 slack channel. Listened to a podcast today on how corporations are now monitoring employees "badge activity" to monitor who's coming in, staying, how long etc. So, what's all that talk about culture, trusting your team etc etc. All BS. You don't need people in the office 8-10 hours a day to get the best work from them. The only time assigned seating made sense to me was in kindergarden and even then it sucked. #notleadership #trustyourteam #dotherightthing #remotework

Simplicity and visibility, not complexity and nuance. Yesterday I was listening to one of my favorite podcasts “At the Table with Patrick Lencioni” Episode 226 What You See is What You Get. In it they were discussing the topic of how an organization keeps focus on what is most important, and which tools worked best. (I’m a big fan of white boards….even with my chicken scratch writing) These days we have so much information that for most organizations it becomes more confusing than helpful. Kind of like the ketchup aisle with 50 choices/varieties! So, how can organizations see the forest for the trees? What about the idea of a Simplicity Consultant?…..Is that a concept that could work? There are many modalities that are based on priorities (call them rocks, thematic goals, the rallying cry, etc etc.) Yet it continues to be such a struggle for organizations. Having someone help them sort out this alone would be such a huge step in the right direction to align a team. This is not outside what many consultants offer in their practice, but framing differently might make it more incising. I was recently listening to the WorkLife podcast https://lnkd.in/gyCJMKy3 by Adam Grant. He was talking with Ed Catmull and Pete Docter from Pixar Animation Studios about creativity. It is a great discussion about how to create space for creativity on a team. The biggest take away for me was the idea that team success is less about the makeup and talents of the team members and more about how the team leaders manage the team. Team members' roles may change, in fact probably should change, depending on the project. And leaders that assume everyone is in exactly the right role on the team are at a disadvantage. The leader's job is to create the environment for team members to thrive. And great leaders do this by knowing the members of their team, allowing for members to dabble outside their area, and calibrating support and challenge to encourage each person to bring their best. So, leader, how are you creating an environment that not only allows flexibility and psychological safety, but also pushes the team to achieve more than they think possible?
