THINGS TO TRY: * Before you write: list the criteria you’ll use to assess the person (and anyone else in the same role). * Discuss three specific business outcomes with every person. * Tie all feedback to business outcomes. * Write reviews of similar length for all employees to equalize level of detail. * Remember this Brené Brown’s mantra: Clear is kind. You’re biased, and that’s ok! Us in HR and DEIB spaces are familiar with the phrase “implicit bias” by now, right? Well, how can you tell if someone is biased? It’s pretty simple… Are they human, yes or no? If yes, they are. And here’s why. We all are biased, in the sense that our brains are pre-wired to make rapid assumptions about the world around us. It’s how we survived when we were hunter-gatherers! So yes, it’s perfectly normal to have biases. However, it’s important to recognize our internal biases and, if they are detrimental to ourselves or others, work to change them. Great questions shared and this is also another important myth to address. So many angles to consider. A. It is important to be included in the conversation; however, in many case BIPOC are included in these types conversations and many times excluded from others (making decisions and changes). B. Are these spaces created in proactive or reactive ways? Ever case is different but my assumption would be the later. C. Are the "employees of color" fully resourced and supported by the organization? D. Now these individuals have met with their employees of color. Now what happens? Are they listened to? What happens when little to no change occurs? So much to explore ans thankful for a book like this.
