I wonder why a Retired Marine Corps General has never been the President of the United States of America. And why NO Retired General or Admiral has even run for president since Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953–1961).  Personally, I think our country is crashing. Our children and grand children will have to fix our crap, or learn to speak Chinese. I know that I am not too smart in this area. But in my opinion, no politician or businessperson can solve our problems. What I do know is that good Generals care about their warriors. Not themselves. They surround themselves with smart people. Regardless of religion, race, politics, gender, etc. A GOOD General would even hire people that he/she disagrees with! Because those you disagree with usually know something that you don’t know or understand. To win a war, you have to consider options. COA – Course Of Action. It seems to me, the TBI Guy, that all politicians and business politicians want is power and money. A Good General wouldn’t even want to be the president. Retired Generals have been to rough, dangerous countries. They have seen terrible things. They have made very difficult decisions.  And I expect that when the war ends, the General just wants to go home. But that is what I think America needs. A president who cares more about our country than himself.

On this day in history, President Roosevelt signed the GI Bill into law. If you view any American Legion social media platform, you’ll be reminded of this historic day. But in reality, today is bittersweet. Sweet, because it’s a reminder of greatness. It’s a testament to what can happen when a Congressionally Chartered Veteran Service Organization fights for the benefit of its members. It’s a model - a picture - of what to strive for. Bitter, because I question whether The American Legion’s founders would recognize the organization today. From a revered institution, to one that seems to systematically black ball women who stand too tall. From a well oiled grassroots machine, to one that seemingly removes effective voices from leadership, because they speak a little too straight. For those that don’t know the history of the GI Bill, The American Legion fought for it alone, against the other VSOs - DAV and VFW. My fear, today, is that The American Legion may no longer be the #VeteranServiceOrganization best equipped to stand in adversity, on behalf of its members. But, perhaps that fear is good. Perhaps competition will, finally, drive us to change - to working with one another for the betterment of veterans as a whole. My hope for today, as individuals celebrate the passage of the GI Bill, is that we remember what incredible things can be done when we come together as one unified grassroots movement. And regardless of our positions, may we work to ensure we elevate the voices of those less heard. Sagamore Institute Senior Fellow Dr. Jerry Hendrix, a retired Navy captain, served on active duty for 26 years. Dr. Hendrix’s research is a core part of Sagamore’s focus on national security, one of three pillars of the Institute’s future research and initiatives. We asked Dr. Hendrix, who will release findings from his research on naval presence during an Oct. 11 event at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site in Indianapolis, about the role of the Midwest and Indiana in national security. Dr. Hendrix: We are called “the heartland” for more reasons than just the fact that we are the center of agriculture and manufacturing for the nation. At our nation’s core, its values and interests are very much the values and interests of the Midwest. We are not as sophisticated or nuanced as the coasts. In fact, we deliberately avoid sophistication and nuance in our approach to the world and each other. We have a commonsense pragmatism in our decision making that extends to defense and national security issues, and it’s important in a time when the world is increasingly dominated by “gray zones” of conflict, that people who still favor the sharp distinctions between right and wrong to have a voice in our national dialogue.
