This NASA Technical Standard is pivotal in ensuring the health, safety, and occupational longevity of NASA career astronauts. The standard outlines essential medical requirements and clinical procedures for astronaut selection and annual recertification. It covers the comprehensive medical needs necessary for successful mission tasks, including high-performance aircraft operations, hypobaric and hyperbaric conditions, microgravity, 1/6 gravity environments, high g-forces, extra-vehicular activities, and robotic arm operations. UAE SPACE EXPLORATION MISSIONS In recent years, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has made considerable advancements in space exploration. An important step in the UAE's space program was achieved in 2021 with the successful orbital insertion of the Hope Probe mission near Mars. From Japan's Tanegashima Space Center, the Hope Probe—also referred to as the Emirates Mars Mission—was launched in July 2020. Over the course of seven months, the probe traveled more than 300 million miles to get to Mars, where it will examine the climate and atmosphere of the planet. Although the UAE's space program was only formed in 2014, it has already made a number of noteworthy accomplishments. Hazza al-Mansouri, the nation's first astronaut, traveled to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2019 on a Russian rocket. Al Mansouri performed a number of experiments while aboard the International Space Station, one of which examined how the human body responds to microgravity. A lunar rover mission that would investigate the moon's surface and carry out scientific experiments has also been announced by the UAE for 2024. The nation has also declared interest in founding a Mars colony by 2117. Overall, the UAE's space program aims to encourage and engage young people in the study of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), as well as conduct scientific research and exploration. If you haven’t noticed lately, ALL of our medical standards appear on our website for use by commercial partners, international partners, FAA, and anyone engaging in human spaceflight. This includes “Tech Sheets” that give a “just the facts” version of tech content and physiology as well as resources to understand major concepts in space medicine, human factors, and human system design in the human rating of spacecraft. Our standards once were well kept secrets. But we decided on a fundamental shift several years ago— to educate and help everyone involved in human spaceflight. We want all those sending intrepid souls into space to be safe. As they say— “All boats float with a rising tide”. 🚀 Soon, “Med Briefs” will also begin to appear, which will describe cases and treatments unique to the space environment. To date, in our 65+ year history— we have never had to return from a mission for a medical reason, despite most models predicting we should every 3-5 years. We’ve come close, but have successfully treated some pretty tough things on orbit. That’s a startling statistic, and that’s not luck. It has required a great deal of effort and aerospace medicine expertise. The rover is set to arrive near the Moon's South Pole in late 2024, near the landing site of future NASA Artemis astronauts NASA’s Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover, or VIPER, is a mobile robot that will go to the South Pole of the Moon to get a close-up view of the location and concentration of water ice that could eventually be harvested to sustain human exploration on the Moon, Mars — and beyond. 4 Lessons I learned from my trip to NASA 1️⃣ Obstacles are the Way Instead of viewing obstacles along your journey as setbacks, understand that they are simply a part of the journey. There is no way around, over, or under. The only path is through. Welcome the obstacles. 2️⃣ Embrace Laughable Ideas When an idea is big, it can easily be dismissed as impossible. This is a fatal mistake. Embrace the ideas that are beyond current comprehension instead of quickly squashing them. This may lead to real breakthroughs. 3️⃣ Perspective Matters For astronauts, it's called the Overview Effect. From space, their perspective on Earth, mankind, and how we interact with the planet and each other is massively transformed. Find a way to gain a different perspective. 4️⃣ Preparation is Imperative In space, mistakes can cost NASA millions of dollars and an astronaut their life. Years are spent preparing for each mission to minimize variables. Do the work. Practice and prepare.
