It's #SingleParentsDay today, 21 March so I'd like to celebrate my family, and all those like us. Being a lone parent brings challenges but also many joys, and meaningful inclusion is about celebrating the many different ways in which families are comprised in Irish society. Lone parents come in all shapes and sizes but statistically they continue to be one of the most marginalised groups in Irish society with higher levels of poverty, lower housing standards and huge barriers to employment and participation in society and public life, barriers like the lack of affordable childcare. We must achieve greater recognition of those in our society who, by choice or not, find themselves raising children alone and move ourselves away from the one-size-fits-all model of families that currently informs our policy and law.
