Major milestone in HIV prevention! Gilead Sciences Phase 3 PURPOSE 1 trial shows 100% efficacy of the twice-yearly injectable HIV-1 capsid inhibitor, lenacapavir, in preventing HIV among cisgender women in sub-Saharan Africa. The news last week that Gilead's Lenacapavir trial was halted due to overwhelmingly positive results was really a landmark moment for HIV prevention - women now have an option for twice yearly injections that can prevent HIV with 100% efficacy (to be verified in real- life settings). As with all innovation, making this drug available where it is most needed, at prices that are affordable, and with sufficient speed will be the issue. Gilead has gone the way of voluntary direct licensing which has proven successful before. However, the multitude of regulatory processes in each affected country can hamper widespread access - as many are deemed too small for pharma companies to pursue. Harmonizing regulatory processes, for example through reliance, would be a great way to test improving access to this drug. Let's see how this plays out #HIVprevention #hopeful #EndAIDS #PrEP

Looking at the evolving #HIV landscape, we observed #HCP sentiments towards ViiV Healthcare's product, #Apretude, that has the potential to reduce a patient's HIV treatment from 365 pills a year to 6 yearly injections. Key themes were around promising clinical data, cost effectiveness of the product and potential aspects of ViiV Healthcare's clinical trial that may have been overlooked.
