After a hectic few weeks, it’s delightful to have a few days off with my little monkey enjoying the beauty of the Pembrokeshire coast. While many things caught my attention from the world of fashion and beauty in the last 2 weeks - from France seeking to tackle the clothes to landfill conundrum by launching a bonus scheme (offering a discount between €6 (£5) and €25 (£21) per repair) to encourage consumers to repair their clothes and worn-out shoes rather than buy new to Tapestry, (the parent company of Coach, Kate Spade and Stuart Weitzman) entering an agreement to buy Capri Holdings (owner of Michael Kors) - on the drive to Wales I found myself pondering the similarities between good fashion and a good musical…
1. The ‘Les Miserables’ model - create something timeless with longstanding appeal that will have customers come back time and again - think a Barbour coat. 2. The ‘Six’ model - take something people think they know and turn it on its head to create a phenomenon - think ‘the jumpsuit’. 3. The ‘Hamilton’ model - breakdown barriers to capture a new audience and challenge your traditional audience in a new way - think ‘athleisure’ in the pandemic.4. The ‘Stephen Sondheim’ model (‘Sweeney Todd’, ‘Company’, ‘Gypsy’ etc) - the musician’s musical, admired for its complexity, wit, humanity and passion that doesn’t disappoint - think ‘a designer handbag’. 5. The ‘Andrew Lloyd Webber’ model (‘Phantom of the Opera’, ‘Joseph’, ‘Cats’ etc) - the popularist approach, deliver what the audiences want time and again in a familiar and trusted way - think ‘the cardigan’ (a staple, not everyone’s cup of tea but loved by millions)6. The revival model - a tried and tested musical with a fresh take (like ‘Oklahoma’ and ‘Guys and Dolls’ currently gracing the West End) - good fashion trends will come round time and again (eventually) - think ‘mom jeans’.Normal service will resume in a few days…
