What is pier? A pier foundation is a collection of large-diameter cylindrical columns to support the superstructure and transfer large super-imposed loads to the firm strata below. It stood several feet above the ground. Pier footing transferred the load of the superstructure to the underlying soil or rock. It is constructed by digging a hole in the ground and then filling it with concrete or stone. Wet polishing of concrete makes slurry. This is a byproduct of the process, and it needs to be managed well. While it would be convenient to do the full process dry, the polished results justify the mess. The video documents a slab that’s been wet processed by rotary grinder. Pointing sandstone masonry with cement based mortar can have a marked detrimental impact. However, it's worth noting that this was a fairly common practice up until the 1990's. DId you know that lime mortar is essentially a sacrificial element, it will erode over the life of a building and pointing works will be required every now and then.
