Social Impact Leader | Project Manager | Consultant | TEDx Speaker | Powering solutions to drive development in underserved African communities
Ever wondered about the hidden threads of inclusivity in our workspaces? In a moment of introspection, I turned my gaze inward, scrutinizing my own practices at the workplace. What surfaced were two key realizations: Our janitor and security guard were conspicuously absent from our annual reports. Recognizing their undeniable value in maintaining a clean and safe environment at our educational center, I decided to take corrective action—they got professional headshots and I’ve urged our Communications manager to include them in the 2023 annual report. As we gear up for a website revamp this year, they'll also have their well-deserved spotlight as members of the team. Acknowledging the significance of personal connections, I traditionally engage in one-on-one meetings with staff to understand their goals, welfare, and experiences at our company. Yet, I noticed lapses in extending this courtesy to the janitor and security guard. Making a mental note, I rectified this by including them in meaningful discussions last year. Additionally, they were integral participants in our team bonding social event, sharing in the joy of games and recreational activities. While recognizing potential limitations based on qualifications and experiences, I advocate for inclusivity in every feasible aspect of our shared experiences. Sometimes, breaking free from the status quo is the catalyst for genuine change. As we stand at the threshold of a new year, I encourage you to engage in introspection, challenge norms, and actively contribute to a more inclusive work culture. Together, let's make this year one where our workplaces truly reflect the diversity and value of each team member. #InclusiveWorkspaces #NewYearReflections #inclusionmatters #inclusiveleadership
