Trivia time: Do you know which state produces the highest quantity of #Tomato in India? If you guessed Andhra Pradesh, you would be just as wrong as I was, until I started gathering data for this post. Well, the answer is Madhya Pradesh with a whooping 27 lakh metric tonnes of Tomatoes produced in the year 2021-2022. AP comes second with 23 lakh tonnes, and Karnataka secures third place with 21 lakh tonnes. The top three tomato-producing states put together account for over 35% of the Nation's produce. Cultivating the crop in most states across the country ensures throughout-the-year availability of this crucial fruit (or is it a vegetable now?) which finds a significant place in our diet. Well, what is alarming is that a significant portion of this yield goes to waste without getting consumed. Studies show that anywhere between 20% to 30% of the produce is lost annually in post-harvest losses. If we consider the grading, handling and storage losses in the stores and households, this figure will still shoot up. The positive news is that we see a lot of startups and government-sponsored programs that are coming up in this space that tackles the problem of food wastage. This could be as simple as adopting systems and processes to manage better handling, to better auctioning + transportation mechanisms, to solutions that enhance the shelf life of the produce. ReshaMandi:Asia's second-biggest Cocoon mandi has been established in Ramanagara. India's first and largest digital ecosystem for the natural fiber supply chain ranging from farm to retail. The state-of-the-art processing facility and warehouse will serve more than 6,000 reelers in an effort to optimize the silk value chain and produce high-quality raw silk through interventions. The business is in talks to raise $100 million or more at a valuation between $600 million and $700 million with a number of international private equity and hedge groups. In its first 15 months of existence, ReshaMandi has added more than 35,000 small businesses to its supply chain, including farmers, small and medium-sized manufacturers, and retailers. ReshaMandi, which was founded in the midst of the epidemic in 2020, purchases from farmers scientifically graded cocoons, provides them to reelers, makes premium yarn available to weavers, and links them with retailers. "As we open Ramanagara's second-largest cocoon mandi in Asia, we want to provide several prospects and opportunities to the entire supply chain ecosystem," stated Mayank Tiwari, CEO and Founder of ReshaMandi. With this mandi. In order to collaborate directly with its stakeholders, ReshaMandi maintains an office in Delhi and will soon build a new one in Mumbai. In order to give our stakeholders a seamless experience, we investigated collecting centers in various farming communities, Tiwari added. One of the earliest Indian marketplace platforms, Resha Mandi, uses technology to help farmers complete the whole cycle of work required to produce and handle silk. Dear #LinkedInFamily! We had a remarkable experience at Azadpur Mandi, North Delhi's largest vegetable and fruit market. Established in 1977, Azadpur Mandi, also known as Ch. Hira Singh Wholesale Fruit Market has expanded to become an essential component in the food supply chain, effectively connecting farmers, traders, and consumers. Azadpur Mandi is a swarming wholesale market that has a determining role in the distribution of fresh fruits and vegetables in Delhi and across the Nation. Our recent visit to Azadpur Mandi was an eye-opener. We had the privilege of engaging directly with farmers and traders, gaining valuable insights into the complexities of agriculture in action. Witnessing the orchestrated chaos of market activity, where fresh produce moves from farms to stalls at dawn, highlighted the industry's need for efficiency. Interacting with traders and logistics professionals deepened our understanding of supply chain intricacies. The price of commodities fluctuates based on the interplay between supply and demand. For instance, the market's surplus of apples on Tuesday led to a sudden price decline. The process of price discovery, seen through negotiations between farmers and traders, was fascinating. It showcased the intricate dynamics of demand, supply, quality, and fair pricing. We also learned about the importance of quality standards in meeting shifting market expectations. Azadpur Mandi operates through traditional auctions, but we noticed a growing interest in online transactions, aligning with the Digital India mission. Government regulations to shape the Indian agriculture sector were enlightening, promoting cooperation between stakeholders. Despite challenges like weather unpredictability, price instability, and changing consumer preferences, farmers and traders demonstrated resilience. However, we did observe illicit behavior, including unregistered traders, price manipulation, illegal storage, and artificial shortages. Azadpur Mandi's annual turnover of Rs 3,000 crore significantly contributes to Delhi's economy and the livelihoods of those in the supply chain. This visit grounded us in the intricate world of Indian agribusiness, providing valuable insights and lessons to navigate and contribute positively to this crucial sector. P. Janakan, a former quality and design engineer at the Motherson Group in Chennai, left his job in 2016 to return to his hometown, Rasibram, in Namakkal, Tamil Nadu. He was drawn back to the lush green fields and nature he grew up with. Concerned about food quality, he embarked on a journey to explore traditional organic farming practices. During his travels across rural areas, he discovered millets but realized they were not widely cultivated despite their nutritional benefits. Millets are gluten-free, alkaline, and rich in protein and antioxidants. Janakan decided to protect and promote millets for their health advantages. He began collecting millet varieties from small-scale farmers who faced challenges due to low market demand and limited processing facilities. Recognizing the need for processing units, Janakan set up a millet processing facility in Namakkal with government subsidies and loans. His facility processes various millets into raw rice, flour, flakes, and more. He also produces millet porridges and health mixes without preservatives. Initially, he purchased millets from traders but later gained the trust of farmers by paying them higher prices in advance or on the day of purchase. Janakan now procures millets from farms across South India, collaborating with farmer-producer companies and processes more than 500 tonnes of millets each year. He pays farmers 20 percent more than market rates and covers transport costs. His efforts have rekindled interest in millet farming. His turnover in the last financial year was Rs 2.5 crore, and expects a turnover of Rs 3.5 crore this year. One of our projects this year has been working with the International Labour Organization on a value chain analysis of the food processing sector, specifically for the #fruit and #shrimp sub-sectors in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.   The project was part of a wider sustainability mission to promote social enterprises in India. The goal of this research was to map the challenges and opportunities in these sectors to drive state-level economic growth.
