Today, for the #PhDOverview campaign, we have our PhD Candidate Marc-Antoine Pigeon MD, FRCPC, OStJ, studying a more comprehensive and pragmatic definition of Health and Safety planning for Mass Gatherings. “Mass gatherings often regroup thousands of participants and are part of every major city’s social landscape, but they represent major challenges, notably for health and safety of participants. Tools specifically designed to help this planning provide various results and often prove not to be enough. Those who know me know I don't have a creative bone in my body. I struggle with ideation and coming up with something new (I like established norms). So I thought, why not push myself out of my comfort zone? Try something creative and new! But how do I do that? At work? Nah, too afraid I'll fail. At home? My husband's creativity level is 1000% better than mine (no joke, he created butterfly wings for my daughter's art project using cardboard and a backpack). YWLC presented an opportunity I didn't see coming. Our Strategy director was looking for volunteers to help organize our very first Carnival. How do you bring together women who were looking to get more involved and contribute back to the community? How do we also introduce the different sub-committees to our YWLC members? I jumped at the opportunity to stretch my creativity and step outside the box. Together with other members, the organizing committee racked our brains coming up with ideas to make the Carnival fun, educational and worth a Saturday morning trip to CBD 😆 One of the ideas I had to showcase the event was creating a POV reel to post on YWLC's socmed channels. Of course, when you come up with the idea, you must be willing to go all in! I volunteered to do the video myself. Learning what to capture during the event, how to cut the videos together, and stringing it with the right music was REALLY stepping out of my comfort zone. This was something I've never done before, and it definitely took a lot of effort on my part to learn and pivot as I went along. But I'm so glad I did it, and I hope you'll enjoy watching the video as much as I enjoyed putting it together (ngl there were some painful moments too 😮💨). Brought up in a religion that doesn’t celebrate Christmas, festive traditions weren't part of my childhood. ☃️ We didn’t embrace the sparkly Christmas wonderland in the way most families did. . What you’ve never had, you don’t miss. And yet, I vividly remember my Primary 4 teacher – Miss Tait – asking us to write a Santa poem. In naive honesty, I expressed my disbelief, only to be ridiculed by my classmates, led by the teacher! 🎅 . And I dreaded the post-holiday “What did you get?” conversations. 🎁 . As an adult, while no longer constrained by religion, I still experience the season in a detached manner – observing the abundance, perfectionism and superficiality almost from afar. I’m aware of the financial struggles faced by many families, especially in a cost-of-living crisis. The societal and peer pressure adds stress, as I experienced firsthand as a child. And feelings of loneliness and grief also seem amplified at this time of year. 💔  . Working with organisations committed to social impact is a privilege, and I’m especially enjoying partnering with Whiteinch and Scotstoun Housing Association Limited to articulate their purpose and goals. . It embodies: 👨👩👧👦 Building community 🎆 Bringing joy 🤝 Supporting those in need . I’m grateful to work with change-makers determined to make the world kinder. .
