Since 1990 many Nova Scotia women have lost their lives due to violence. For 62 women from 1990 to 2018, their deaths came at the hands of their intimate partners, forever silencing their voices. Five of these women lived in Pictou County. The Pictou County Chapter of Silent Witness Nova Scotia is a group of individuals working together to raise awareness of the realities of domestic violence & intimate partner violence. Through community involvement and support, free standing, life-size, red, wooden silhouettes, each one bearing the name of a woman whose life ended violently as a result of domestic violence, are created. Because these women no longer have a voice the silhouettes are called Silent Witnesses. The Pictou County Chapter was created in April 2013. "Remembering all the women who have lost their lives, along with the children who grow up without safety, is a driving factor in our work" - Shelley Curtis Thompson, Executive Director Pictou County Women’s Resource and Sexual Assault Centre and member of Pictou County Silent Witness. “Raising awareness about gender-based violence and the impact it has on individuals and communities is a critical step towards building safety and ensuring survivors know where they can turn for support. Every time I stand with our Remember Me silhouette, I feel called to help her voice be heard.” Board meetings take place on a regular basis but no less than four (4) per calendar year. They are approximately two hours long. Additionally, every Board member may be asked to serve on a working committee, such as; communications, finance, fundraising etc.. Attendance at committee meetings, and time dedicated to committee work, is also required. Increased participation may be needed, from time to time, when hosting events or working on special projects. Silent Witness Nova Scotia is a grass roots organization that relies heavily on the work of the Board of Directors. The chapter includes representation from key organizations who share a common goal of ending gender-based violence and Intimate partner homicide. “Probably the most important work we do is help families create a silhouette and develop a story of her life as a mother, a daughter and a friend. These silhouettes offer us a stark reminder that women in our own community are being murdered by their intimate partner.” – Donna MacGregor, Co-chair Pictou County Chapter SWNS. Anyone interested in applying to be on the Pictou County Chapter’s Board of Directors, is asked to complete the online application form using this link: https://lnkd.in/eCqCbMf2 Deadline for applications is February 5th. Questions can be forwarded to silentwitnesspc@outlook.com or the Pictou County Women’s Resource & Sexual Assault Centre (902) 755-4647.

This is a tragedy and simply cannot go on. We must identify men who use family violence earlier. We must break the cycles of violence sooner, and with more consistency. We must hold men who use violence accountable. We must offer alternatives. We must educate men, families, friends and employers that there is another way. Our sector is doing truly fantastic work by starting men on their journey to change. But significant national leadership and investment from all governments in prevention, early interventions and men’s behaviour change must happen if we are serious about reducing – and ending – the scourge of family and domestic violence in this country.

Today is International Women's Day 2024, a day that celebrates the achievements of women. This year, we want to shine a light Llamau's mission is to end homelessness for women, one of the biggest causes of homelessness for women is domestic abuse. Last year Llamau helped over 5,000 women, children and young people through our wide range of Domestic Abuse Services across Wales. It's a staggering number, each representing an individual whose life has been touched, and potentially transformed, through their interventions. 98% of women, children and young people reported feeling safer after receiving support from one of Llamau's Domestic Abuse Services last year. Protection and prevention initiatives create the building blocks to safe, independent and fear free lives. As we move past International Women's Day, let's not forget the ongoing efforts needed every day of the year to combat domestic abuse. Organisations like Llamau are making a real difference, but they can't do it alone. We are proud to support Llamau in their mission. #InternationalWomensDay #SupportServices #EndDomesticAbuse

November is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and today begins 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Between 2009 and 2021, family violence against children and youth sadly increased in Canada by 25%. By 2021, one in five victims were aged 17 and younger, with more than 64% of those being girls. Girls, women, and 2SLGBTQI+ people disproportionately experience gender-based violence, with the true number of those affected unknown, as many do not report to the police due to shame, stigma, or fear. We must all work together to combat domestic and gender-based violence and provide needed support to organizations helping those affected, such as Blue Door, Abuse Hurts, and Women's Centre of York Region.

Today is Day 3 of the 16 Days of Activism to End Violence Against Women. 📣 Action # 3 is to stop victim shaming/blaming. 📣 Remember that there are many reasons why a survivor will not report the violence they have experienced or why they are unable to leave an abusive situation. Call out victim-blaming and counter the idea that it’s on survivors to avoid situations that might be seen as “dangerous” by traditional standards. 💜 Shift the focus on listening to how a survivor wishes to be supported. Explore options with them. Don't know where to start? Visit https://lnkd.in/gDGRZpaG to find shelters and organizations providing services to survivors of gender-based violence in your area.

Today is Day 8 of the 16 Days of Activism to End Violence Against Women. 📣 Action # 8 is to learn how to support a survivor who asks for help. 📣 Do you know someone who is experiencing or has experienced abuse? The chances are high that you do. Two-thirds (64%) of people in Canada know a woman who has experienced physical, sexual, or emotional abuse (Canadian Women’s Foundation, 2021). When someone shares their story and/or asks for help, the most important thing you can do is listen and offer your nonjudgmental support. 💜 Visit https://lnkd.in/gDGRZpaG to get to know and familiarize yourself with shelters and organizations that provide services to survivors of gender-based violence, intimate partner violence and family violence. This way, you can provide specific information if and when the survivor is ready. 💜

Over the weekend UN Women’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence got underway, with the launch coinciding with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on Saturday. The #16Days campaign is a call to action and a reminder that violence against women and girls is the most pervasive human rights violation worldwide. There is #NoExcuse for gender-based violence. Here in Victoria we know that family violence, much of which is perpetrated against women and children, is one of the main drivers of homelessness. We also know people who have experienced family violence are on average waiting almost two years to get access to public housing, up from 17 months in 2021/22. That’s too long. Building enough public and community housing so people fleeing family violence can quickly find a safe, secure, affordable home, is one step governments can take to prevent gender-based violence. #16days #NoExcuse

Freelance Ops & Project Manager | Product Operations Strategist | Streamlining Processes & Driving Efficiency for Impact-Driven Companies | Empowering CEOs of Start-ups
October is #domesticviolence awareness month. I've found it's often overlooked as we focus on #breastcancerawareness month. But I fully believe that there is room to recognize many important things within a month - 30 days is a big chunk of time. 1 in 4 young women (aged 15-24 years) who have been in a relationship will have already experienced violence by an intimate partner by the time they reach their mid-twenties. Across their lifetime, 1 in 3 women, around 736 million, are subjected to physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner or sexual violence from a non-partner – a number that has remained largely unchanged over the past decade. Often times we ignore, either knowingly or not, signs from coworkers or friends, or we are worried about overstepping. But if you are struggling or know someone who might be, here are some resources if you or someone you know needs help: -National Domestic Violence Hotline to find local resources in your area. You can also call/text them 24/7 for assistance. -DomesticShelters.org to find housing in your area -National Resource Center on Domestic Violence for representation and advocacy options -If you or someone you care about has suffered from Domestic Violenceand/or Sexual Assault, call the Rise Above Violence 24-Hour Hotline at (970) 264-9075. Have any other resources? Drop them below and/or share this with your community!
