Today, the topic was “What’s Top of Mind” for the Compliance Officer. The answers included the same things that are top of mind for all business leaders (like the pressures that come with a challenging political and economic environment), and some Compliance-specific issues (like new enforcement focus areas and expanding areas of responsibility). It was great to explore these at #PCC with Keren Bisnauth, Audrey DeGuarde, Elizabeth Weiss, and Masha Goodman-Khan, MSJ.

In our most recent Orellium Advisory Services Leadership Publication, released yesterday, we covered the importance of a cohesive and well-thought out non-market strategy for law firms. In the paper, we cautioned that "firms promoting socially progressive initiatives at home while maintaining operations in regions with poor human rights records face reputational risks. This inconsistency can lead to significant public backlash and undermine the credibility of their commitments to social responsibility." Against that background, we caution firms that highlight their support for Pride Month across social media, and yet, within the same month (and against the backdrop of Pride branded images) publicise on the same platforms, their growing presence, skills and success in regions like the Middle East. The disconnect is very obvious, and the starkly conflicting messaging risks causing offence to clients and team members. At the very least, it can come across as extremely tone deaf. Non-market strategies need to be carefully crafted and rigorously applied.
