How important is a first impression? During my time at Shell, I witnessed many people’s first days at the company. Each individual had a different experience, just like mine was unique. But what I noticed was how important their first experience was. This doesn’t only apply to Shell, but anything we do. First impressions can have a lasting impact on someone and their view of you or the role they’re taking on. We tend to forget this sometimes. My first boss at Shell, Anthony Barber, had a lasting impact on my time with the company. His welcome was part of my journey to stay at Shell as he nurtured me and my new family and gave me the opportunity to shine early on. There is so much value in that initial experience starting a new role. Even if someone isn’t a great fit for that particular role, a caring experience can give them confidence and belief that they’d prefer to look for something new internally and stay with the company, rather than look elsewhere. It’s not just about people being fit for one role, but making them feel welcome and giving them the best chance to succeed. Week 3 of National Safe Work Month focuses on working together to support all workers. Brené Brown made me do it ! This past Wednesday during an All -Hands call for my business unit, I unconsciously showed a level of vulnerability that I never have before, in 15 years in industry. I got teary eyed in front of 1000 people. I was speaking about the human beings, using their names, that are behind all the HSE statistics we have. “Statistics are human beings with the tears wiped away.” Paul Brodeur I thought I would share some of my REFLECTIONS as this has turned into an extraordinary learning opportunity. Reflection 1. I immediately felt embarrassed. That feeling was in my head, because the CORE Values of Baker Hughes came out loudly, in the many people who individually reached out to me. Colleagues told me things like, they got teary eyed too, and that they were proud of me showing vulnerability. Reflection 2. The message landed. We must continue to do the work to be “Safe to Start”, to do better, innovate, set higher expectations, build more resilience in every aspect of our work and listen to those who do the work. Not because it’s a procedure or a rule or regulation, but because we owe it to those we have lost to LEARN. https://lnkd.in/gYtP_2wU Reflection 3. As someone who is been in the HSE space for the better part of 10 years, I have been a part of investigating my share of FPI (fatality or permanent injury) events. Every single event changes you. In the world of safety we do not talk about our own wellbeing enough. Especially as we are typically the teams trying to help keep everyone else safe and healthy. FPI events have their own trauma. A bit of that trauma came out while speaking Wednesday. I could not help but remember a particular event from many years ago in which I was speaking to family members who had just lost their loved one. I need to continue to work on that for myself and help my extraordinary team to ensure they are ok as well. #wearebakerhughes #leadershipculture

Just one month into 2024 and we’re already off to an exciting start at Bechtel. Teams are back in full swing. Our priorities for the year are set, and our goals are crystal clear. Along with the plans we make and the work we do, we measure success by HOW we achieve results. Our Vision, Values and Commitments—or VV&Cs for short—drive our approach to everything we do. Last year, in celebration of Bechtel Corporation’s 125th anniversary, we released a video that I believe, captures what these VV&Cs look like in practice. Now, with new challenges and opportunities on the horizon, I watch this short film with fresh energy, supported by the same extraordinary team that makes us who we are. What motivates you to go to work each day? During my career at Shell, it has been a broad combination of the work, the people, the opportunities and the power to make a difference in people’s lives. That’s why it's bittersweet to write a post to say that at the end of October, my 27+ year career at Shell will come to an end. As I reflect on my career, I can honestly say I’ve had some incredible opportunities. I’ve also faced – and overcome – some challenges. Like many people, one of the biggest challenges was during the initial days of COVID. As a newly established organization just a few months old, the pandemic was a true test - and it makes me very proud to see how our teams continued to deliver. Yet the pandemic also taught me an extremely valuable lesson - always lead with empathy. I'd also like to share three simple ideas I've learned throughout my career. - Focus on value - Be positive – it’s often underestimated. - Own your space There’s so much more I could say, but in reality, much it would simply focus on how incredibly grateful I am for all the amazing opportunities I’ve had during my time with #ShellIT. I wish my successor, Mark van Liefland, huge congratulations and all the very best in his new role. Of course, I’m not going anywhere quite yet, so stay tuned for more updates.
Best Job I’ve ever had was at FMC now known as TECHNIPFMC. My favorite place I’ve worked was ExxonMobil. It was contract but it was still fire!!! There were plenty of growth opportunities at FMC, they trained you well to make sure you were properly prepared to do the job, and I met some of the most awesome people that some I still talk to today. To be honest I thought I’d retire from there but God had other plans. Exxon probably would have taken first place in my heart, but I fell out of love with how the contract situation was being handled. I ventured on elsewhere and I’ve been venturing on ever since. I share this to say if you’re thinking about leaving you’re current situation outweigh all the pros and cons heavily! I know some situations run its course and there’s nothing to do to repair the partnership, but if it isn’t completely broken don’t try to fix it. Ride out the peaks and valleys. Find that thing that made it easy for you to get up and fight traffic for that opportunity once again. It’s hard finding places that honor partnerships, doesn’t hide financial hardships from their employees, or just outright value your presence. At the end of the day peace is everything. I also understand that you can’t be afraid to take chances in the name of growth, but if something has been good to you hold on to it just a bit longer. Besides….. I don’t think hiring managers like seeing a ton of job switches in such a short period of time even if the story does add up 🤷🏽♂️. As always, Stay blessed out here y’all!
