Basketball, compared with football, is a more meditative sport. In football, you shoot at a giant goal, but usually whilst running, with a couple of defenders and a goalie in the way. No surprise that most shots miss the target.
 Basketball can be chaotic too, but in a real game, there are moments where it’s just you, the ball, and the basket. All you have to do is push the ball with the correct power, in the right direction, and it has to roll off your fingers without slipping or losing balance. And the only things that can stop you are not having practiced enough… and anxiety.
 No wonder that basketball is good at preparing kids for life. There are risks, pain, and a lot of disappointment. But there’s also camaraderie, growth, and pure unfiltered joy.
 And at the end of the day, there is no question about it: playing basketball is worth it! Want your child to learn basketball or to improve their basketball skills? Once high school players reach a certain level, shouldn't they challenge themselves to play 17u basketball? Playing at this level can help them prepare for college basketball and increase their chances of getting recruited. However, we must also consider the benefits of holding kids back from sports. Should we prioritize academics over athletics? It's a tough question, and the answer may vary depending on the individual. At what point should parents let their kids find their own passion? You’d be surprised how many free throws get missed in a high school basketball game. With the game on the line all of a sudden something so simple - a shot from the foul line, becomes near impossible. In these moments it’s easy to think, and that’s probably the worse thing you can do. This is the time to tap into your training. Thousands or more have been shot in practices, and this is the one that counts. This is the one you’ve been preparing for. The roaring crowd is not the one that needs your attention. That’ll probably just throw you off. Let go and sit in your castle of muscle memory. Let it fly through the sky, and even if you miss, there is another one too. Shooting a free throw goes beyond basketball. It is a glimpse into how relaxed and at peace you can be under pressure. I watched players that could sink both without even thinking. Nearly every single time. Then there were those who hoped it’d go in, and seemed to have to summon the motivation each time. These usually didn’t do as well. So what’s the lesson? How do you score some points for the team of your soul when you’re down? Simple. Stop overthinking. Shoot the ball. #basketball #learning #growth #overthinking

Score! Our very own Alistair has been perfecting his basketball skills, focusing on weight control and coordination by shooting 3-pointers from one side of the hoop. Encouraging children to learn basic basketball skills not only helps promote exercise, but it also lays the groundwork for a lifelong love of staying active. Plus, it's a great way to make friends! My advice to a child and parent on how to become a college basketball player. Step 1 Get involved in the game as early as possible - the most important aspect here is developing a love for the game. Step 2 Emphasize FUN-damentals. Center everything around fun while developing fundamental skills, including footwork, dribbling and shooting. Step 3 Practice, practice … and practice some more. Basketball is largely based on skill, which takes years to master. I recommend physical training and/or playing almost daily. Step 4 Gain access to a coach and/or private training. An athlete will figure out a lot through self practice and playing, but a coach/trainer is necessary to fill in the gaps in knowledge. Step 5  Compete. Figure out where you stack up against elite competition within your age group. Note that you are competing for a limited roster spot (only 1% of HS athletes go onto NCAA D1). College basketball is never guaranteed, but if you follow the steps above you will give yourself a great chance to achieve it.
