Across the country, summer traditions mean picnics and barbecues. But for some families, summer highlights the challenge of food insecurity. Many families that rely on free or reduced school-provided meals struggle to feed their children when school is out of session during the summer months. During these months, 30 million children face unreliable access to nutritious meals, as reported by Feed the Children. Ensuring every child has healthy meals is vital. At The School Food Project we understand the consequences of kids going hungry. It pains us to see food insecurity growing in Australia, particularly when 1 in 2 children globally are provided lunch at school. We are inspired by all the solidarity we see in this space and are more committed than ever to our mission of providing children with healthy and delicious school lunches, equitably. Together we can change food in schools and feed a brighter future. #foodinsecurity #schoollunches #costoflivingcrisis https://lnkd.in/gnZVm4cY

With the recent increases in costs, a decrease in portion size and quality has been evident in a significant number of Schools. However, we are proud that our Clients benefit from the skills, knowledge and purchasing power that our tender processes deliver, to ensure that quality and price remain consistent. We also insist that Contractors drive uptake of Free Student Meals, through eligibility checks, whilst offering these meals to Schools at net food cost. I wrote for The Independent today about school food - and how I think the focus of the news coverage this week has been in the wrong place. We should be talking about government funding, and how the per-meal rate of £2.53 creates a barrier to great school food. I talk about * How food inflation, staff costs and energy bills have all skyrocketed, and the per meal rate is not keeping pace. * Why are we underfunding school food when the evidence suggests it has enormous health and economic benefits? * How not only is the eligibility criteria too low, but that we're missing children (250,000 of them) in failing to auto-enrol, (a letter co-signed by 130 representative from charities, councils and academia went to the Schools Minister today!) * How eligibility caps mean children who need it can't access free school meals (9 in 10 parents want to see immediate expansion of free school meals to every child living in poverty - new research from The Children's Food Campaign Sustain: The alliance for better food and farming). * How caterers and schools are working hard to make the most out of not enough money. * How government should be doing the work on understanding what a school food rate should be in 2024 (and a heads up to School Food Matters for actually being the ones doing the work on the cost of a school meal). * And finally how 89% of parents WANT schools to offer a good range of healthy meals (Shout out to Barbara Crowther and the Children's food campaign team for their work on this). Non sibi, sed suis While resources are provided for food on-campus, there are still segments of students that experience difficulties with accessing food. As a result, a trio of students formed Students Against Food Insecurity (SAFI), which has partnered with various organizations and departments to distribute over 3,500 pounds of food to the Tulane community. Learn more about the efforts and positive changes SAFI has brought to Uptown. 📰: bit.ly/4clvvgz
