The built environment is a massive CO2 emitter, approximately 40% of total emissions annually. This includes energy consumption within buildings and infrastructure, but majorly it’s the production and transportation of construction and building materials. In the process of sustainable construction, we must not only focus on reducing operational emissions but also look at decarbonizing construction and building materials. This is essential for mitigating the environmental impact of the construction industry and achieving our carbon reduction goal. 🚫 Don't confuse Embodied Carbon Emissions and Operational Carbon Emissions 🚧 🏗️ Embodied carbon emissions encompass all emissions released during the construction phase: from extraction, manufacturing, transportation, to installation of materials ⚡ Operational emissions result from using the finished building: maintenance, and energy use like heating, cooling, and lighting 🌍 Lifetime emissions merge both embodied and operational carbon, reflecting the total environmental impact of a building from start to finish 🌱 For effective carbon management in construction, it's crucial to balance immediate embodied carbon with ongoing operational carbon, targeting long-term sustainability 🌱 💡 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dvNKhRZm #SustainableConstruction #GreenBuilding #CarbonFootprint #ConstructionIndustry #EnergyEfficiency #ClimateAction #EmissionsReduction Alectro

Embodied carbon, the equivalent carbon dioxide (eCO₂) emissions associated with the entire lifecycle of a building or infrastructure (excluding operational energy use), is a crucial consideration in sustainable construction. The table below, based on the widely-adopted European standard EN 15978, helps to identify embodied carbon emissions. It encompasses greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from raw material manufacturing, material transportation, on-site manufacturing and construction processes, infrastructure maintenance, repairs, refurbishment, and end-of-life emissions from demolition, waste processing, transportation, recycling, and disposal. Distinguishing itself from operational carbon, embodied carbon currently represents a significant portion. Today, buildings contribute 39% of global energy-related carbon emissions, with 28% coming from operational emissions and the remaining 11% from the rest of their life cycle. Advancements in reducing operational carbon emissions are expected to bring a shift by 2050, with embodied carbon emissions equal total operational emissions. Embodied carbon is gaining momentum, leading to advanced legislation looking for updated norms to continuously reduce operational emissions while starting to measure and reduce emissions throughout the entire life cycle of existing buildings. What is 'embodied carbon' in a building? 🏢 🟢 Embodied carbon refers to the CO2 emissions associated with a building material or construction process. 🟢 It accounts for greenhouse gas emissions before a building becomes operational and after it stops being used, including demolition and recycling. 🟢 As the focus shifts from just operational carbon to a building's total carbon footprint, understanding and calculating embodied carbon is becoming increasingly important for sustainable construction decisions. Decarbonizing the built environment is essential for a net-zero future. Almost 40% of our world's CO2 emissions are linked to the way we build and operate buildings. 30% of this footprint happens in the building phase. ECOPact is a low-carbon concrete product range that can reduce the embodied carbon of buildings, infrastructure, and homes up to 70% without offsets. #ECOPact #Sustainability #BuildBetter #Lafarge #Concrete #CarbonReduction
