This AORN Journal feature article discusses a randomized controlled study aimed to investigate the effect that preoperative education provided by the perioperative nurse about the OR environment and intraoperative care has on surgical fear in patients. Key takeaways included: ✔️Many patients experience preoperative fear and anxiety before a surgical procedure. Their fear may be related to the surgery itself, the anesthesia, or the potential for a poor outcome. ✔️A total of 92 surgical patients were evenly split into the control and intervention groups. ✔️Using the Surgical Fear Questionnaire, patient fear and anxiety levels were assessed in the patients’ rooms the day before surgery, in the clinic before education, and on arrival to the OR after education. ✔️Reducing patients’ fear by providing education specific to the OR environment can have a positive effect on anxiety related to surgical interventions.
