Rob Dial has a recent podcast episode about Doing the "Thing" and I can't stop thinking about it. We decide we want the goal. So we start taking action. But is it actually moving us toward the goal or is it still in the comfort zone? Planning, research, talking to people about the goal. All important but not actually doing the thing. (Can be the most fun part for some of us) At the top of your planner or calendar, write out one thing that you can do today that will get you closer to seeing results. Repeat! If you're struggling with taking the first step, consider the alternative. What's the cost of inaction? Remain the same?

In episode 229 of the Grad School Femtoring Podcast, I share my secret weapon for improving focus and productivity — brown noise. I explain how brown noise helps with focusing on tasks one may not be interested in doing. I also mention how this might be a useful sound cue to use for those of us that want to quiet our minds or block out external noises. If you enjoy learning about these topics, consider hiring me as a speaker to give my signature workshop on sustainable productivity where I share over a dozen strategies similar to this one.
