Meet Your HACCI SA Board Member - Allicia Tsolis! Allicia is the Executive General Manager of Personal Injury Claims at Suncorp. We asked Allicia a few questions about her Greek heritage and being a businesswoman in Adelaide. How has your Greek background influenced your professional development? "I was raised to have a strong work ethic and never to expect anything to come easy. If I wanted something, I had to work for it. With a fiercely independent woman as a mother and a business owner as a father, my family instilled in me a high level of drive that plays out in many aspects of my life, not just in business. Growing up, we had many setbacks as a family, yet I firmly believe that it was these setbacks that taught me the skills I now have which underpin my professional journey, particularly the skill of resilience. The Greek community has taught me a sense of mateship, purpose, and support, which has been a key contributor to my personal and professional growth". What makes Greek Australians good at business? "I believe all types of diversity are what make businesses successful. Diversity in nationality, gender, age, beliefs, experiences, and more! Specifically, to the Greek culture, it brings an element of drive and perseverance that I can draw upon. Our first-generation Greek Australian family members fought hard to create good lives for themselves and their families when they migrated to Australia. They have left a generational footprint of undeniable strength, courage, passion, and unity, all of which are key attributes in any successful business". If you would like to find out more about Allicia, you can read the full interview in our HACCI SA Newsletter. https://lnkd.in/exewGNbx #HellenicAustralianChamber #HacciFederation #HacciSA #Australia #Greece #partnerships #innovation #growth #prosperity

Advisor to the Mayor of Klaipeda city | Executive Board Member @ UBC | Master's in International Marketing and Trade | Master's in Business Administration
Despite Lithuania's lack of major yacht harbors and marinas, there is a growing demand for docking facilities along its coastline, especially in Klaipėda. Klaipėda's Mayor Arvydas Vaitkus outlines the city's ambitious plans to revitalize its coastal areas and transform into a bustling hub for maritime tourism. The article highlights the significant need for smaller ports and berths, citing the country's fluctuating boat registration statistics, which indicate a substantial interest in utilizing its inland waterways. Presently, Klaipėda only has two small ports, both unable to accommodate the increasing number of vessels seeking mooring. To address this demand, Arvydas Vaitkus proposes several strategic projects, including the development of marinas every 50 kilometers along the Baltic Sea coast, enhancing infrastructure, and providing more leisure activities. These initiatives aim to not only rejuvenate Klaipėda but also position it as a competitive maritime destination. Key projects include establishing a marina in the southern part of the city, creating a comprehensive waterfront complex with amenities for boat enthusiasts, and revitalizing historic areas like Winter Harbor. However, bureaucratic hurdles at the national level have slowed progress, frustrating local efforts. Despite challenges, Mayor Vaitkus remains optimistic, emphasizing the potential economic and social benefits of these projects. He calls for greater government support and public awareness to prioritize maritime infrastructure development, echoing the success of neighboring countries like Estonia and Latvia. Klaipėda's transformation into a vibrant marine hub not only promises economic growth but also enhances the quality of life for residents and visitors, making Lithuania a desirable destination for both work and leisure. There’s a new video out on my Youtube-channel, and this one is about putative Portuguese slave taking in northern Australia in pre-colonial times. You see, this is an idea that has popped up in literature for a long time, that Portuguese sailors came down from Timor to the north Australian coast to take slaves. This idea is perpetuated in the literature still today. But what is the basis for it? Did the Portuguese really come down to take Australian Aboriginal slaves? In this video, I look at the evidence. And it turns out there is a lot of smoke (many mentions in the literature, that is). But actually, the fire is really hard to find. #AboriginalAustralians, #AustralianAborigines, #AustraliaBeforeTheBritish, #Portuguese, #Spanish, #Timor, #Slave, #Slavetaking, #SlaveRaid, #PrisonerofWar, #POW, #Tiwi, #TiwiIslands, #venaca, #MelvilleIsland, #BathurstIsland, #FortDundas, #FortWellington, #PortEssington, #NorthernTerritory, #vanDeimensland, #Malay, #Makassar, #Indonesia, #SandalWood, #StevenFarram, #JohnCampbell, #PieterPieterszon, #MaartenvanDelft, #PhillipParkerKing, https://lnkd.in/d2fgQ_24
