Many interactive dashboards aggregating crime trends you select a dropdown and get an individual cities data. But often of interest is to compare your city vs other cities or comparison areas. Here I created a dashboard to show relative statistics for officer hiring trends -- this allows you to see how your agency compares to others of similar size (can select the comparison cities via population selection) https://lnkd.in/etTz-EXH Provides example metrics for number of sworn per capita (and 80% coverage intervals) from 1975 through 2022, percent female compared to US total for the same time period, and percentile rank of civilian hires in 2022. Tech stack is supabase backend and D3 charts on the frontend. #dashboard #crimeanalysis #lawenforcement

Cleaning, organizing, and prepping survey data for analysis. It’s probably one of the funnest parts of my job. Seeing the stories start to unfold is like watching a movie. You are anticipating finding out where the story takes you (and determining whether or not you like the ending). Whatever direction the data takes you, there’s always truth, something to learn, and a story to be told. It’s incredibly rewarding and inspiring to know that your work can lead to advocacy and macro level changes for the most important group, vulnerable populations that participate in the programs and systems we are hoping to impact. #dataanalysis #spss #surveyresearch

Another interesting information I discovered from the book I am currently reading titled Everyday Data Visualization by Desiree Abbott is Florence Nightingale. Florence Nightingale was a famous nurse and social reformer in the 19th century. She is known for her pioneering work in nursing during the Crimean War. 🏥💉 She did a visualization with sliced pie charts to explain the causes of mortality in the army in the east as at 1854! 🥧 It is unarguably one of the earliest data visualizations. #dataviz #dataanalytics #dataanalyst #datavisualization #datastorytelling

From NHS Data to Dragons' Den: My Unexpected Civil Service Data Challenge Journey It all started with a news article on the intranet. The Civil Service Data Challenge was calling, and a Radio 4 piece on tightening disability benefits struck a chord. Mental health was buzzing like a hive in the media, and I knew I had to contribute. Data sets danced in my mind, and a 500-word application later, I was… not accepted for my own idea, but for another equally impactful one. The twist? We weren't using data I was familiar with, but venturing into the NHS realm. Our ambitious goal: a "traffic light" system, built on NHS data, to assess customer mental health and guide agents in their interactions. It was a diverse team, a kaleidoscope of grades and departments scattered across the UK, held together by the magic of MS Teams. NTT Data, our sponsor, hummed with the promise of commercialising the winning idea. But for me, the true prize was the presentation training. From blank slides to polished stories, we learned to make our data sing. And sing it did, to a panel of top civil servants and a seasoned Dragons' Den veteran. Yet, despite the polished pitch, the final remained just out of reach. Accessing the vital NHS data proved trickier than a dragon's lair, its confidentiality walls impenetrable. The Data Challenge was a whirlwind, not the career-defining win I initially envisioned. But it gave me more: Unexpected insights: into corporate agendas, internal motivations, and the delicate dance of data access. Invaluable skills: crafting powerful presentations, collaborating across silos, and navigating complex systems. A broader perspective: on the Civil Service landscape, the value of data-driven solutions, and the importance of resilience in the face of setbacks. My Data Challenge journey may not have ended with fireworks, but it ignited a spark within me. I emerged, not as a triumphant champion, but as a more informed, adaptable, and empowered civil servant. And that, in itself, is a victory worth celebrating. Share your own unexpected career journeys in the comments! Let's learn from each other's experiences. #CivilService #DataChallenge #CareerDevelopment #Resilience #Learning
