HR managers - in your organisation, are your new managers struggling to lead their teams?
Are they struggling to delegate work?
Think about your own experiences. In the past, have you ever completed work for your boss that ended up not being used or turned out not to be needed, making you feel that you had wasted hours of your time?
This is 'busy work'.
Busy work is happening across your organisation. Team members are working to complete the work they have been tasked with, spending hours and days to get it done on time. Only to find that there is no real reason for doing it, and it doesn't go anywhere.
It turns out a lot of work, asked to be done by others, isn't needed after all.
This is demoralising and impacts everyone's performance.
There is a missing ingredient.
The missing ingredient is understanding the 'why'.
⚫️ Why is this work required?
⚫️ Why is it important?
⚫️ Where does it fit into the bigger scheme of things?
Can the person delegating this work explain why it is needed?
If a manager doesn't understand why this piece of work must be done, it isn’t ready to delegate.
Now imagine the new managers out there who don't know any better. They know they need to tap into their team but are missing this crucial delegating aspect.
Teach your new managers (in fact, anyone who delegates) to dig a little deeper into why this piece of work needs to be done. It requires spending time to develop an understanding of the ‘why’. They shouldn't assume it's obvious.
Great delegators ask themselves: do I understand the reason why this task, project, or major piece of work needs to be done?
If the answer is 'no' or 'I'm not sure', then it's not ready to delegate.
As an HR manager, empowering your new managers with the knowledge of purpose-driven delegation can make all the difference.
