Absolutely true! As the famous Peter Bromberg quote goes: "when we avoid difficult conversations, we trade short-term discomfort for long-term dysfunction". It's unbrave. And too many of these decisions will eventually make us cowards.
I've found this to be true in all scenarios - in romantic relationships, friendships, work scenarios, etc. The general theme of embracing discomfort also goes beyond this one-on-one scenario. It applies to just about everything - especially conversations with ourselves:
- If you avoid the discomfort of exercise, you eventually become "weak"
- If you avoid the discomfort learning, you eventually become "dumber"
- If you avoid the discomfort of boredom, you eventually become an addict
Stagnation/complacency isn't stationary, it's recessive. Over time, something will give - likely, our self esteem. We all have that inner voice that wants us to "do better" and "be better", and if there's one thing that's true, it's that we can't trick ourselves.
Lean into the discomfort.
