Asking "How can I help?" is like having an initiative, whereas providing specific ways in which you can offer assistance demonstrates being proactive at work. By expanding on this idea, we can highlight the importance of taking ownership and going beyond simply offering help, ultimately driving productivity and success within the organization. When you ask someone, "How can I help?" you show that you are willing to lend a hand and contribute. This is a positive initiative, as it demonstrates your willingness to support others and be a team player. However, it is equally important to be proactive and anticipate the needs of those around you. Being proactive means taking the initiative to identify specific ways you can assist others. Instead of waiting for someone to ask for help, you actively seek opportunities to contribute and make a difference. By demonstrating this proactive approach, you show a higher level of commitment and dedication to the success of the team and the organization as a whole. Rather than just offering help in a general sense, take the initiative to identify and address specific areas where your skills and expertise can be valuable. This may involve anticipating potential challenges or understanding the goals and objectives of your colleagues or the organization. By doing so, you not only alleviate the burden on others but also enhance your own professional development and growth. Being proactive at work showcases your initiative, self-motivation, and commitment. It allows you to take ownership of tasks and projects, leading to increased productivity and success. By going beyond the simple question of "How can I help?" and actively providing specific ways in which you can contribute, you become an invaluable asset to the team and demonstrate your dedication to achieving collective goals. Thank you Utkarsh Manocha for sharing your story.

I reported to an executive in my graduate role. In my first performance review, he said something that shook me. “Utkarsh, I don't like when you ask me 'how can I help', so I want you to stop asking that from today.” I was confused... But he was right. What he said next put things in perspective. “Instead of asking me 'how can I help' , I want you to pitch how can you help” After the first few weeks, it’s expected you know enough about the job, the challenges, and what’ll make your manager’s life easy - that you’re able to voice your opinion and propose solutions. At the end of the day, we’re hired to solve problems. Since then, I have never asked a manager “How can I help”. I’ve always gone with “Would it be helpful to you if I…?”

Some funny yet blunt corporate lessons from Election Results - 1- Even if you are star employee you may not get promotion - Ayodhya😣 2- CTC- 400 will be shown but in-hand will be 291 only 🤪 3- The best promotion and appraisal comes from switching- Nitish Kumar 🫢 4- Don't trust ur manager during appraisal discussions, let the real appraisal come 🥲 -Exit Polls 5- Top performers (Modi ji) won't be able to always save your team. 😒 6- Don't over rely on just one skill (Ram Mandir) and forget to upskill yourself. 🤓 7- The Loan resource (Nitish Kumar) can sometimes handle production bugs better than the existing project employees. 😎 8- Don't ever overestimate SLAs (400 Paar) and stick to realistic resolution time (273) 😜

Senior Manager Program Management | Automotive | MSc in Project Management | Head of Department | Strong interest in organizational behaviour and project management
WHY DIDN'T YOU GET PROMOTED? I was chatting with some of my head of department colleague about potential ways of growing our people. I had wrote about this before and I will write about it again. There are thousands of people who eagerly want to grow. There are hundreds of them who are willing to take extra miles. There are some who thought they have achieved everything that is required, threaten their superior for promotion or they will leave the organization. Case to case basis, if you are in a toxic organization, you might not grow forever. If you are not in such an organization, then you will have equal chance. One of the most important aspects for promotion or maybe the most important criteria is you are able to do what the next level required. It is no longer about throwing files to your boss and expected the senior management to run through each data and make their conclusion. It is about you doing the summary of the data and presenting it to your management in a way that others will also acknowledge your work. 4 years back, I do not understand why my HOD keeps asking me for presentation rehearsal. I do not understands why my monthly presentation becomes a major concern to him. I also do not understand why I need to reword my lines or triple check the data. Just before submitting the promotion for higher management approval, he informed me of the reasons behind all the hard work. After being promoted, I began to realize that my presentation was very important to management that it drives their decision making. I learned that for me to be promoted, my HOD is finding the correct platform to showcase my capabilities. I have met people who were in the same position for 10 years despites of graduating from world class universities. These people blame their bosses for being stagnant and envy people around who grow fast, but, whenever asked to take extra managerial and coordination responsibilities, they protest. Your management assigned you to a certain task for reasons - you are the most trusted, the most suitable or promotion plan is already in place, waiting to be proven. Do watch the video - interview with Hiredly CEO.

"It is not part of my job description, I will not do it unless I get promoted and compensated accordingly." Whilst it is important to be compensated fairly and that your work is acknowledged, a lot of the times you will get promoted as a result of going beyond your initial job description. The mindset of understanding gaps or areas of improvement, and working towards them even if they are not within your scope, not only contributes to the success of your team, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘭𝘴𝘰 𝘣𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮: ➡ It provides 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: the feelings of competence, autonomy and belonging will increase by working and succeeding in company goals ➡ It is a great way of 𝐮𝐩𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 and gaining in-demand competences ➡ In the right environment, it will be recognized and increase your chances of being 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐝 ➡ Regardless of your current work environment, the increase of your scope will more likely find you the 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 elsewhere 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘫𝘰𝘣 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴: ➡ That 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐧: communication is key. Do you want promoted? Most people go to work every day to do well and improve their life. Getting promoted at work is an important part of this journey and for many people a primary validation of their success. Here are my suggestions for the 5 most basic things you need if you want promoted and to be happy along the way; 1) Perform well now! Give your current role your best, no matter the circumstances. 2) Stretch yourself now - Even if you are doing your current role well, meeting all expectations, that's not good enough if you want promoted. What else can you do? Where can you go above & beyond? How do you consistently exceed expectations? Can you take a half step towards your next role while still being in your current one? 3) Volunteer happily - I wish more people would do this. Wherever you work there's likely more to be done than people to do it and there are always new and extra projects. Raise your hand, ask to help, fill in for someone, jump on an extra project. Oh...and yes this is above and beyond your current role and you will likely work more hours. Oh...and follow through and do it well. You don't get points for raising your hand, you get points for contributing. 4) Build skills & experience - Probably the most obvious one is that you need the skills & experience for the next role you want. If you don't have them do anything you can do now to get closer to it. 5) Patience - You can't control when you get promoted you can only control what you can do in order to be ready for it. This one is getting more and more difficult as "instant" is everywhere. Oh...and patience is not passive, it's active. I love this dictionary definition, "The capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset". 6) All About Attitude - Get a bad attitude while you're waiting for that promotion and 1 to 4 go out the window. Bad attitude is an achilles heel. Stay positive and stay patient and your day will come.
