🌍 From June 25-27, I am participating in the Cities Mission Conference 2024 - Empowering Cities: The Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission in Action, in Valencia. I will be joining two panels: 🔹 High-level Panel - Valencia Cities Climate Week: Leveraging multi-level governance for climate action: national, regional, and local cooperation. 🔹 All hands on deck: How do national platforms help cities become climate-neutral? I will also participate in the Exchange and networking event for national platforms for climate-neutral cities, on June 27, co-organised by CapaCITIES and NetZeroCitiesEU. 🚀 One week to go until the third edition of the Cities Mission Conference 'Empowering Cities - the Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission in Action'! The conference will take a deep dive into the remarkable progress from #MissionCities over the last year as well as delve into the challenges and opportunities as we continue to journey towards climate neutrality! Mission City mayors, deputy mayors, and practitioners will connect with the European Commission, representatives of national and regional authorities, NetZeroCitiesEU partners and other actors to forge collaborations and engage on Mission-critical concepts and groundbreaking ideas 🤝 The 2024 edition will be held in the framework of Valencia Cities Climate Week in #EUGreenCapital Valencia. The Valencia Cities Climate Week encompasses several key events alongside the Cities Mission Conference, in particular the European Urban Resilience Forum 2024 (#EURESFO24) and Energy Cities’ Annual Forum (#GraftingCities2024). 💚 We look forward to next week which will be an exciting and unique opportunity to create synergies and promote urban sustainability, as well as to find common solutions to achieve climate neutrality and resilience. 💡 Collaboration takes center stage in Brussels! 🤝 This week, NetZeroCitiesEU Consortium partners convened in Brussels, fuelled by the shared vision to support cities on their journeys to climate neutrality!    NetZeroCities Partners:  ✅ Brainstormed and workshopped to unlock innovative solutions, igniting lively discussions around all upcoming activities as we begin this new year  ✅ Dived deep into the key successes and challenges to best guide cities as they pave their way to decarbonisation    Partners also heard from Philippe Froissard, Head of Unit for Strategy, Policy, Coordination and Urban Transitions, European Commission / DG RTD who gave an update of the Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission, key takeaways, and inspiring talk to partners.    🚀We have an exciting 2024 lined up! How are Spanish cities redefining the meaning of radical collaboration in their journey towards climate neutrality? 🌆 🌱 Discover how Spain's CitiES 2030, launched in 2020 as a small-scale project among several Spanish cities, has grown into a model of radical collaboration against climate change, now uniting 15 cities, 8 academic institutions, 17 private entities, and 7 public institutions to accelerate local climate action. CitiES 2030 is aligned with the European Commission's "European Missions" and the NetZeroCities programme. It is designed to drive significant transformation through the power of collective intelligence and action. With seven major cities having successfully submitted their Climate City Contracts and five cities receiving the Mission Label, it is setting the stage for wider impact, aiming to expand its network to 20 cities. 🔖 The European Commission has awarded its ‘Mission Label’ to 23 cities participating in the NetZeroCities programme, marking a significant achievement in the Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission. The Mission Label is the European Commission’s recognition of cities’ successful development of their Climate City Contracts which outline the overall vision for climate neutrality and contains an action plan as well as an investment strategy. The awarded cities join another ten awardees who received the first labels in October 2023. Led by EIT Climate-KIC, NetZeroCitiesEU is an integral component of the EU Mission for Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities, which falls under the umbrella of Horizon Europe. This initiative equips European cities with a diverse array of tools aimed at facilitating their transition towards neutrality. A study of 362 candidate cities found that urban transport is the main sector for climate neutrality, combining new technologies with public transport and active mobility. The study found that preparedness for the mission is correlated with research and innovation activities on transport and mobility.
