⚖ Grant funders want to be as objective as possible when it comes to awarding grant funds. All applicants should have equal opportunity to win funding. 🔎 Many funders will go so far as to provide the evaluation methods, scoring systems, or rubrics in the RFP. You will know EXACTLY what funders are looking for before you submit. 🎮 Get to know grant proposal evaluations as well as the evaluators. This is your cheat code to WIN more grants and submit proposals that are EXACTLY what the funder is looking for. #FridayFUNDday #grantwritingtips #grantwriting

Fundraising strategy development, business planning, workshop facilitation, bid writing & fundraising training for charities & social enterprises
Thanks Institute For Voluntary Action Research and Nick Addington for continuing to bang the drum for unrestricted grant funding for charities 👏 I recently heard about some research* into the impact of MacKenzie Scott's philanthropy on US charities. When charities receive an unexpected large unrestricted grant, their common approach is to: 1. Top up the salaries of staff who are long overdue a pay rise 2. Invest in much-needed infrastructure (e.g. tech or to support fundraising) 3. Commit to one big new initiative, for example launching a new programme or significantly expanding a current programme This is interesting because if we flip it on its head, we can say that when funders only offer restricted funding, they are contributing to charities: 1. Knowingly underpaying their staff 2. Under-investing in the infrastructure they need to work effectively 3. Being unable to prioritise the work they know is most important & impactful This is why it's never been more important for funders to provide unrestricted grants. Thanks to those that do, and here's hoping other funders start stepping up to the plate. * Research by Panorama Global, as mentioned on this excellent podcast by I.G. 📣 Funders! Could you start the new year fresh with a new, unrestricted, funding practice? Based on experiences and ideas from the William Grant Foundation, Chief Exec Nick Addington shares 2 practical ideas on how to increase unrestricted funding for your grantees. 👇 1️⃣ Turn restricted projects grants into ‘designated’ unrestricted grants. This means 💚 Being prepared to fund various costs and activities depending on what grantees need. 💚 Trusting them to follow-through on the plans already discussed together or explain plan changes 2️⃣ Add unrestricted, general operating support to project funding (for example 10% of the value of the project grant to start). This would help organisations generate surplus in unrestricted funds to build and deploy reserves and maintain working capital. 🤔 Grant proposals should be logical Don't make the funder fill in the gaps😕. Proposals should CLEARLY show how the program connects with the needs assessment and funding objectives. 🏆 The goal of any grant proposal should be to make the program seem SO LOGICAL and needed, it would be foolish NOT to fund it. ☑ Identify funder objectives ☑ Demonstrate needs ☑ Show program is best to meet needs ☑ Take guesswork out of proposal #FridayFUNDday #grantwriting #grantwritingtips
