Sometimes, you have to break the mold to find solutions - and last month, we had the incredible opportunity to tap into collective imagination in Birmingham, Alabama, along with other winners of the Housing Affordability Breakthrough Challenge. We’re beyond grateful to Build Urban Prosperity (Build UP) for hosting us in their hometown, to TheCaseMade and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute for some truly incredible learning opportunities, and our partners at Enterprise Community Partners and Wells Fargo Foundation for making it all possible. Executive Director of DC Affordable Law Firm | Social Justice Advocate | Public Interest Lawyer | 2022 40 Under 40 WBJ Awardee I 2023 Honorable Mention EXCEL Award | Leadership Greater Washington Class of 2024 | Mom
The conversation about heirs’ property and estate planning is one that has continued to gain prominence within public discourse in recent years, and we are grateful to all who are interest in learning more about these topics and DC Affordable Law Firm’s impactful work in this realm. Last week, DCALF’s team & supporters came together to screen the poignant film “Silver Dollar Road,” and learn from our esteemed client, Markita, as she shared her heartfelt story and championed the importance of estate planning for individuals across generations – Markita, it has been an honor to help you advance your planning goals, and we deeply value your candor, conviction, and comradery in shedding light on the importance of estate planning. The video below includes a portion of Markita’s words, followed by her reflections and images from DCALF’s event in a second post -- as Markita shared, “The topic of Estate Planning is a crucial need in our community to preserve the future of our most precious land, property or rightful things owned by us. Too often — we have watched many who are constantly ripped off by the injustices of society due to not having the proper legal protections pertaining to an estate or proper final will in place; resulting to stolen land, stolen property, family feuding, etc. As a young Black mom, it was imperative to fight for a sealed-tight legacy that will legally give my heirs the freedom to pass down my hard earnings for years to come.” Markita’s story is a testament to why #dcciviljustice works and should be a priority across DC. The racial wealth gap demands it and our city’s residents deserve accessible #dccivillegal. #probate #heirsproperty #estateplanning

A nonprofit in St. Louis is taking on the racial wealth gap, and in the process showing not only the ongoing need for those services but also the key role financial advisors can play. Check out Part One of an important feature from FP Chief Correspondent Tobias Salinger. Invest STL #BuildingBlackWealth #wealthmanagement #equality #financialplanners
In the West End of St. Louis, a concrete staircase leading up to a vacant lot is a reminder of how the building of wealth involves history and potential. Stay tuned for Parts II and III on Tuesday and Wednesday as well as a profile of one of the pro bono planners assisting participants in the Rooted program on Thursday. And please join us tomorrow at 12:30 pm ET (or via recording a couple of days later) for a Leaders Forum discussing the program and why financial planning is integral to this effort: https://bit.ly/45ARga7 Thank you so much to everyone who has taken time to share their insights as well as to the The State Historical Society of Missouri for making photographs available for public use. Passionate Advocate for Financial Empowerment | Dedicated to Uplifting Underserved Communities and Individuals |Spirit aligned in redefining purpose to make life changing impacts
For credit unions, this is a conversation that must be addressed in the here and now. All three panelists indicate that a board MUST must be relevant where the credit union is growing, not where it was. While a credit union "may have been around for 62 years", will it be around in another 62 years without staying relevant? Relevance is not just about products and services and relevance to the members, but is the BOARD relevant to the direction and growth of the credit union and its community. I will be the first to thank our primarily volunteer board members, but now may be the time for the next generation to begin to provide oversight for credit unions to continue the good works set in foundation by current long serving board members for the credit union to continue to be relevant.
Are some board members past their 'shelf life?' And what can be done? CUToday.info has full coverage from @WOCCU's WCUC in Vancouver, but this discussion was particularly interesting. https://lnkd.in/e7wbTNzD
