I was introduced to this video today. It is regarding an experiment done in the 50's to demonstrate human nature that naturally tends to conform with the behaviors of those around us. In layman's terms, we humans have the tendency to succumb to peer pressure. The term peer pressure has a negative connotation where individuals are forced to follow the norms of society, however peer pressure can also be viewed in a positive way. For example in the creation of a positive OSH culture in the workplace. If everyone follows the safety rules from the most senior management to those working on the shop floor, it will create norms where one must follow safety rules. This will create a positive peer pressure for those working in the organization to conform to the norm of the workplace. I can see this will definitely help in reducing the rate of accidents and incidents in the workplace which will ultimately have the positive effects of increasing productivity of employees who will be able to come and return from work safely and also reduce the extra cost incurred due to accidents and incidents.
