𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗨𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗬 𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦 We recently attended an event on Artificial Intelligence (AI) strategies for business, and this article underscores several consistent messages for both individuals and businesses alike. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: Ethical deployment of AI requires a deep understanding of contextual factors. It's not just about profitability; societal benefit should be a priority 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: While AI offers speed and scalability, complex problems demand thoughtful, deliberate solutions. KPMG: AI boosts supply chain agility Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to enhance supply chain agility, according to a new KPMG report titled “Raise Your AI Short Game to Boost Supply Chain Agility.” The report emphasizes that businesses are grappling with compound volatility, necessitating the need for supply chain flexibility. AI emerges as a technology that can help companies anticipate market volatility, make complex network decisions, and achieve business objectives in the short term. In fact, 57% of the executives who participated in the 2023 KPMG Global Tech survey, stated that AI will help them achieve their short-term goals. 𝗗𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁. 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗹𝘆 ..... ? ..... or just an excuse to shirk responsibility? According to a Capgemini Research Institute study, 𝟳𝟯% 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗜; 53% trust it for financial planning, 67% for medical diagnoses and advice, and 66% for personal relationships or life (1).   The level of consumer trust in #AI is both encouraging and concerning. Encouraging 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗔𝗜 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗽𝘂𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱. Concerning because generative AI, has the potential to be exploited for unethical purposes, can leak data, and has been known to "hallucinate".   To be honest, I was surprised by the degrees of #trust reported in the study, particularly in the fields as sensitive as financial planning, and personal relationships. However, the research by IBM “5 trends for 2024” shows 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 (𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮) 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 (2).   Personally, I think that achieving full trust in AI is not desirable. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿-𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? Where should trust start? Buying or using an #AI solution? Should vendors be required to show that they understand the solutions they are selling and their potential risks? Should #CIOs and #CEOs be asking vendors hard questions? 1) Do you fully understand how the system makes decisions? 2) Are you willing to take responsibility, should the AI solution result in harm to customers or a staff member who uses it? 3) Is your solution compatible with democratic processes, and can you demonstrate this? A KPMG and The University of Queensland global study of AI attitudes found that, across 17 major countries, 71% of the public believe AI regulation is necessary. Figure 17 of the report shows the public has higher confidence in National universities and research organisations to regulate and govern AI, and lower confidence that government and commercial organisations can achieve this.
