The aviation industry calls for bigger European SAF incentives. As the aviation sector seeks to achieve “carbon neutral” status by 2050, #SAF has emerged as the most feasible and cost-effective option. However, after the initial airline enthusiasm over the emergence of SAF as a strong option for decarbonization in a sector where there are few other options available, the aviation industry has since been showing some reservations about its viability and cost. Airlines have been calling for governments in Europe to follow the US government’s lead in fostering the SAF industry through generous subsidies on the supply side, rather than just relying on sticks through the mandates that are currently being built into the Fit for 55 package. SAF is still scarce and therefore expensive. Generating the necessary volumes of alternative fuel would require enormous areas of natural resources, the airline industry worries. The bill for the change will ultimately fall to passengers, as the airline industry has been eyeing the looming hit to its volatile profit margins. Prima CarbonZero's Green Diesel Europe report examines the options for airline executives in trying to meet their 2030 and 2050 sustainability targets. ❓ If Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is more sustainable, why not COMPLETELY REPLACE conventional jet fuel? [Part 2] Aside from the need for sufficient aromatic content in blended SAF that powers these aircrafts, there is another huge barrier to 100% SAF: the supply chain. The current supply chain for jet fuel follows a BULK MODEL, whereby bulk ordering allows airlines to enjoy economies of scale. This lower cost tied to jet fuel inevitably affects the competitiveness of SAF in the industry. ✅ But SAF CAN BE COMPETITIVE TO JET FUEL. With last-mile blending, airlines can procure SAF AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE, while still adhering to all JIG and ASTM standards. If you're wondering how SAF and affordable can ever be in the same sentence, drop me a message on LinkedIn! 📩 #SustainableAviationFuel #SAF

#SAF #aviation #eFuels Some facts about sustainable aviation fuel (#SAF) from the CAPA - Centre for Aviation https://lnkd.in/eFF7HcP9: 📌 SAF adoption is largely being led by full service airlines and network airlines. 📌 Full service and network airlines accounted for 93.7% of publicly declared SAF use, while they accounted for 84.1% of total aviation fuel use. 📌 SAF offtake agreements: - full service airlines and large network airline groups accounted for a 66.9% share of reported SAF offtake agreements (with identified purchase amounts) according to data from ICAO, as of Dec-2023. - independent low cost carriers (LCC) account for just a 14.5% share of announced offtake agreements - this comes despite LCCs operating a 32.2% share of global seats for the same period. 📌 The #EU: Large European network airlines have been among the fastest to adopt SAF: - European airlines accounted for 65.4% of globally reported SAF use; - Air France-KLM Group was the standout in terms of SAF usage, with airlines across the group consuming more than 50 million litres in 2022 and in terms of SAF as a proportion of total fuel use, it was approximately five times above the industry average. - Lufthansa Group and IAG - were the second and third largest users of SAF globally. 📌 The #US: three large US network airlines - Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and American Airlines reported collective SAF use of more than 27 million litres between them - approximately 71% of all reported SAF use by commercial airlines in North America.

Thanks for a brilliant global SAF overview Maryna Hritsyshyna 🙏 Some of the key highlights: 👉 European airlines leading the way and account for 65.4% of globally reported SAF use 👉 Air France-KLM Group was the standout in terms of SAF usage - approximately five times above the industry average 💪 But there is still a lot to do by all parties - the industry, regulators, partners and travellers. Getting a SAF market in place is key for a more sustainable aviation and where we ALL can join forces 👫 #SAF #aviation #airfranceklm

Going against conventional wisdom, in June 2022 we launched a direct-to-consumer sustainable aviation fuel offering, called 'Pay Here, Use There'. Since then we have been transparent about our results to help build trust and wider ‘buy in’ into what we are doing. Each of these voluntary SAF bookings by Victor customers are helping establish a critical new SAF supply chain which is necessary for aviation to reach net zero in 2050. 'Pay Here, Use There' should not be exclusive to Victor customers. It is a pragmatic solution that can be adopted far more widely by the commercial aviation sector. #climateaction #aviation #netzero #saf Neste

As you will be aware, the Sustainable Aviation Fuel market is currently fast moving, often conveying mixed and contradictory signals. IATA predicts SAF production will triple in 2024, with exponential increases on the horizon. The SAF industry is buzzing with investment news, competitor activities, regulatory updates, and innovations. However, it's not good news across the board, with some producers scaling back their operations. This leads to the key question - which are the signals that matter? Discover how Kline's SAF Watch Tower will help you focus on the signals that matter, unlock opportunities, and better manage risks. In the pursuit of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, the aviation industry finds itself at a pivotal juncture. While various pathways to net zero are possible, all feature Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) as a key component in curtailing carbon emissions within the hard-to-abate air transport sector. In 2022, #SAF fuel production remained very low, amounting to just 0.24 Mt, a mere 0.1% of the overall volume of jet fuel. Nevertheless, the output of SAF has staged a remarkable five-fold growth over the past three years, indicative of robust demand. In 2022, airlines purchased all the available SAF supply globally, notwithstanding the price differential to conventional jet fuel. To achieve a substantial scale-up of SAF production, collaboration is required between governments and key industry players. Such efforts will pave the way for globally synchronized strategic policies, offering incentives and facilitating the investments necessary to bring about the expansion of SAF capacity and production in time for aviation to meet its net-zero commitment by 2050. Starting January 2025, the world’s first legally binding Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Mandate is set to revolutionise aviation sustainability. SAF is projected to contribute around 65% of the emissions reduction needed for aviation to achieve net zero by 2050. The new SAF Mandate imposes strict criteria on both producers and airlines. But what exactly are these critiera, and what must airlines and producers do to stay compliant? Our latest legal insights break down the specifics, explaining what this means for the industry and how it will shape the future of flight. At Oracle Solicitors, we’re here to help you manage these changes.
