Companies invest significantly in hiring, training and developing women, often only to see them leave the organization as a result of a life event. Caregiving, parenting, education, burnout - the reasons for women stepping away from their jobs are many. We’ve found that preventing this pause from becoming permanent starts way before the employee takes the hiatus. It’s the #TheInfyWay. And I’ll let one of my colleagues, share the experience in her own words:
BECAUSE CAREER PAUSES SHOULDN’T BRING CAREER COSTS
Rakhi Singh is a business leader managing a portfolio of financial services clients. As I came across her story and her journey at Infosys – both as an expecting and a new mother, some of her words particularly stood out. She said, “I was concerned about two key challenges - one, how my stakeholders would respond to me announcing my pregnancy, and second, how effective I’ll continue to be at work during the journey and once I’m back. What transpired when I did share my news demonstrated a very supportive ecosystem.” “My managers made it clear that there would be no change in my role, portfolio or their expectations from me, until I signal that I needed one. My pregnancy was thankfully, uncomplicated and I remained actively engaged and contributed consistently to serving my clients and the business through that period. After welcoming my little one, I was ready to gradually resume work in about 4 weeks. I felt supported by the ecosystem and knew I could communicate my needs should I ever feel the desire for something to change. In about 8 weeks, I was back at full capacity. I also felt empowered to make decisions. An Infosys Excellence Award and another award for Sales Excellence followed in those early days. It felt great to be back”.
In FY23 alone, I could tell you for a fact that 6,976 women colleagues availed parental leave and 99% returned to work. 365 women also joined us through the ‘Restart with Infosys’ program. But that’s not really the data point I invite you to focus on. Do take a note of how many times Rakhi uses the word feel in her narration. Feeling positive, feeling empowered. As we live our purpose to create the next opportunity for our people, those feelings and those values are something we started to pay attention to a long time ago, as avidly as we pay heed to numbers that track our progress on making Infosys truly inclusive. And that’s why every time I come across heartwarming anecdotes like that of Rakhi’s, it’s a reinforcement that realizing an organization’s purpose takes focusing on the intangibles as much as on the tangibles.
Women make up 39.4 % of our workforce. They are more than a third of our most precious assets – our people. There’s no moving forward for us without them joining us in leading the way. From your perspective, what’s the best thing about being a woman at Infosys? If you’ve got a story of your own, do please share it as comments.
