Today I was fortunate to share in the facilitation of Catholic Schools Broken Bay's Staff Development Day on Curriculum Reform, with a particular focus on the common grade scale and consistent application of grades. Leading a group of professionals in moderation activities and facilitating discussion around big ideas for assessment, teaching and learning were just some of the highlights of the day. #teaching #education #assessment #educationalleadership

Brightbeam CEO, Chris "Citizen" Stewart and Ismael Jimenez, Director of Social Studies Curriculum for the School District of Philadelphia, explore the importance of high-quality curriculum in education. The conversation covers the issue of teachers sourcing curriculum from unreliable websites and the need for better quality control. The role of parents in monitoring curriculum and engaging in conversations with teachers is emphasized. Chris and Ismael also highlight problems with bad curriculum, such as the lack of guidance or reliance on biased perspectives. Humanizing education and focusing on pedagogical skills are identified as key factors in improving curriculum quality. The conversation delves into the importance of effective teaching, the need for teacher support and professional development, and the challenges of curriculum and "indoctrination." https://lnkd.in/eKWSCGat

Implementing instructional materials and professional learning is a long term strategy that will yield results. But it is a long game. The right supports need to be in place, including continuous improvement methodologies, time for learning, and resources. This is change management and work that matters. Ultimately, it is about equitable outcomes for students.
Great reminder by Lynette Guastaferro of Teaching Matters and important partner of Robin Hood that changing curriculum strategies is a long-term project. “We’re two months in,” she said. “This is about the next five years of change.” We can do and must do this! Proud to be in partnership with all the educators, families and NYC Department of Education making this bold move so all our children will learn to read. https://lnkd.in/eg_vwnMK

Convinced that every class in a Catholic school should be taught from a Catholic worldview? Need resources, ideas, staff buy-in, or just a place to start? #MakingEveryClassCatholic is what I do! Let's get started.
One of the most common questions I get in this work is about how integrating Catholic faith across the curriculum works differently in elementary and in high school settings. What question would you like to see me address next?
