President, Wow Writing Workshop/Transforming the college essay coaching experience for professionals and students. Regional coordinator, Twinless Twins International
I asked Teege Mettile, co-host of the Admissions Directors Lunchcast, if he might take on the college essay in an episodes. Why did I think it was important to discuss this topic, he asked me? I explained that the college essay has gotten a lot of attention in the aftermath of the US Supreme Court ruling against affirmative action and the arrival of ChatGPT and that it was a good time to have a real discussion about it. The result: a fascinating podcast about the essay's purpose, what admissions decision-makers look for in any essay, and so much more.
Bridging Ed Tech Theory and Admissions Practice Reality | Co-Host of The Admissions Directors Lunchcast
In our profession, we talk about essays a lot. Like, a LOT. But rarely does the conversation come from the perspective of the admissions officer. What should counselors be looking for? How should admissions directors train their staff? What is the proper role of an essay in admissions? To help Nathan Ament and I answer that question, we were fortunate to have time with Kimberly Lifton, President of Wow Writing Workshop and Jake Browne, Dean of Admission at Eckerd College. But once you have a clear headline in mind, what you can do is to prompt engineer the content of your press release in 15 mins and ChatGPT can produce a draft for you to calmly take your time to enhance and embellish and there's always that regenerate button to expand your versions and spend time to insert the compelling tones and verify for accuracy (which is a much better time spent on perfecting the draft release, agree?) 😉 ChatGPT is a friendly useful tool to shake off that writer's block, the best it can do is to help you kick start your story or article and the rest comes from your "Soul".
Press releases cannot be written in 30 minutes. They are not your primary school essays or social media captions. It takes proper understanding of the proposition and a focused mind to write a compelling press release. So, just like great things take time, even press releases do.
