The state of motherhood can look... a little bleak sometimes. Motherly®'s recent report shows that 18% of working mothers left their jobs in the past year, due to either staying at home with their children or lack of affordable childcare. Reshma Saujani sums it up well: "America is in a childcare crisis and the data shows it's driving moms from the workforce and threatening the economic security of our families. It's time for us to reimagine our workplace cultures around the realities of motherhood and invest in the structural supports moms need to work and have kids." Exciting news! Applications for the second phase of England's largest ever expansion of free childcare are open from the 12th of May! Starting from that date, eligible working parents with children as young as 9 months can register for 15 hours of free childcare each week, with the program beginning in September 2024. With this rollout, hundreds of thousands of parents will receive support for the first time, potentially saving families nearly £7,000 a year when the full 30 hours become available in September 2025. To ensure parents secure a place for September, they should check their eligibility at Childcare Choices https://lnkd.in/gTUgSsp This is especially useful for individuals returning from maternity, paternity, or parental leave, as it may help them find the return to work more manageable — why not share this post with them! #childcare #employeesupport #employeewellness

Shared Parental Leave As my partner and I come to the end of our shared parental leave (SPL), I wanted to reflect on my personal experience as I was surprised to find out that since it's introduction in 2014, SPL has only been taken up by around 2% of eligible parents and caregivers. There are a number of reasons why parents will not feel able to take SPL, including of course financial reasons, so I feel extremely lucky to have had such a positive experience. It is possible to share the leave in a number of ways but we decided that I would take the first nine months and my partner would take the last three. We have found some of the benefits to be: - Me being able to focus on settling back in to work without worrying about childcare arrangements and the inevitable sickness bugs that follow children starting nursery - Sharing the mental load of caregiving responsibility; we are both aware of our daughter's needs and routine day to day and share the burden equally - Empathy with the other's position - working and childcare both have pros and cons! - Most importantly for us a chance for both of us to form an individual bond with our child Thank you to both of our employers for supporting us in our journey into being working parents Cleveland Clinic London RoyalBerkshireNHSFT #sharedparentalleave #SPL #workingparents #worklifebalance

Childcare has a significant impact on employee retention, especially among female workers. More than a third of women reported voluntarily leaving the workforce due to childcare expenses or availability in 2022. What can an employer do to assist working parents and address retention concerns? Some ideas include partnering with a childcare network, offering on-site childcare, or providing child-care stipends to offset some costs. The Lib Dem’s recently announced their policy - A Better Start in Life - which will reform the childcare sector by giving dads & partners 6 weeks paternity leave paid at 90% of salary and parental leave pay will double. This is a positive step in providing the best possible start in life for newborns as it cannot be underestimated the impact a present father can have on a child's life. https://lnkd.in/diCJpKaf #ParentalLeaveReform #FamilyFirst
