We're two months away from #BlackHistoryMonth in the United States and now is the time to start thinking about how you will honor Black history within your workplaces. Of course you should celebrating and centering Blackness in different ways throughout the year (I give the blueprint on how to do this in Chapter 10 of my book Decentering ⚪️ness in the Workplace) but it's also nice to have time designated for these efforts throughout the year. Some topics I love to explore include: •What does it mean to Center Black Employees in Your Workplace? •Understanding and Addressing Hair Discrimination at Work •Dismantling and Disrupting Anti-Blackness in Your Workplace •Addressing Misogynoir: Creating Safer Spaces for Black Women at Work If your organization or institution is looking for a speaker or workshop facilitator for BHM, don't wait until the last week of January. As we commemorate Black History Month, we not only celebrate the past but also honor the enduring strength and resilience that continue to inspire change. This February, we reflect on the profound contributions of Black communities across all sectors, from civil rights trailblazers to pioneers in science, technology, and the arts. Their achievements have indelibly shaped our world and underscored the importance of equity, justice, and diversity. Amidst these reflections, we pay special homage to Madam CJ Walker, a beacon of innovation, empowerment, and philanthropy. Madam Walker rose above the constraints of poverty and discrimination to revolutionize hair care for Black women, thereby laying the foundation for generations of entrepreneurs. Her story is a testament to resilience and vision, transforming personal success into avenues for widespread social change and uplifting Black communities. Madam Walker's legacy extends beyond her entrepreneurial spirit; it is a reminder of the power each of us holds to foster change, advocate for equality, and create opportunities for others. Her life's work challenges us to see beyond our immediate circumstances, to give back, and to invest in the potential of every individual. As we share this tribute to Madam CJ Walker, let it serve as a catalyst for us to engage in meaningful conversations, educate ourselves, and take actionable steps towards a more inclusive society. Her story, and the stories of countless other Black individuals, weave the rich tapestry of our shared history and guide us in our journey towards a future marked by equality for all. Let’s honor Black History Month not just in February but throughout the year by learning, growing, and supporting one another in our collective quest for justice and equity. Portrait of Madam C. J. Isn't this answer obvious? It's definitely a great article. My point is... Way before Black History Month, one simply needed to ask any Black communities to understand our daily experiences have been the same whether it's in the workplace, in the streets, or on across social media. Rarely I come across someone with a great story that their org did something meaningful that drives real change to elevate inclusion. Most programs are just transactional and establish no accountability. #antibullying, #antiracism, #integritymatters, #equityandinclusion. https://lnkd.in/ewj8cTwE

Today, millions of Americans join to celebrate Juneteenth, a day that honors the freedom and resilience of the Black community and is also a symbol of the importance of diversity and inclusion. Lumen Technologies has a big focus on allyship. Juneteenth is an important opportunity to demonstrate allyship - to learn and listen and be intentional about your support of those around you. It’s also a chance to take some time to reflect on your own journey of learning and allyship, and to support causes and organizations that advance racial justice and equity. Juneteenth is a day of celebration, but also a day of action! Let’s celebrate the freedom, joy, and creativity of the Black community. Let’s celebrate the diversity and inclusion that make us stronger. And let’s celebrate cultures that value inclusion and empathy as much as innovation and excellence.

I was thrilled to share my knowledge with Foresters Financial and their staff across 3 countries about how to ensure that their Black staff feel very much included at work. Using my experience as a Social Worker, Psychotherapist and Wellness Consultant, I used research & data as I talked about the urgent need for this conversation, the current experience of Black individuals at work, the detrimental effects of a lack of inclusion and the need to push past the status quo. Of course we discussed to great benefits of intentional inclusion. The question we all need to ask ourselves now is: who is in charge of “inclusion” in the workplace? The very term implies that the workplace belongs to a person/group and that it’s theirs to include/exclude at will. There is still so much work to be done. #corporateconsultant #hrconsulting
At Foresters, we believe in the strength of diversity and are committed to fostering an environment where every voice is heard and valued. #BlackHistoryMonth provides us with an opportunity to deepen our understanding and appreciation of the Black community’s rich heritage. Throughout February we celebrated the Black community at Foresters through events and articles showcasing Black achievement and highlighting challenges still present today. To close out our celebrations, our Black@Foresters employee resource group hosted a learning session with Roxanne Francis, MSW, RSW, about Black inclusion in the workplace. The interactive session featured discussions on allyship, challenges, and opportunities. Learn more about IDE at Foresters: https://ow.ly/tK1H50QJmgz #ThisIsForesters #diversityandinclusion

#TheMorningInclusive We continue to celebrate Black History Month, a time to honor African Americans' rich & diverse heritage and their contributions to our society. As a leader in the field of Belonging: Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (BIDEA), I want to share with you a historical moment that exemplifies the power and impact of Black leadership and representation. In 1971, 13 Black members of Congress formed the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), a non-partisan group that aimed to advance the interests and rights of Black Americans and other marginalized communities. The CBC was born out of these members' frustration and isolation in a predominantly white Congress and their desire to create a collective voice and agenda for their constituents. The first chair of the CBC was Charles C. Diggs Jr., a representative from Michigan who had been a vocal advocate for civil rights, anti-colonialism, and anti-apartheid. Diggs was instrumental in organizing the CBC and securing its first meeting with President Nixon in March 1971, after the CBC boycotted the State of the Union Address to protest the administration's neglect of Black issues. During the meeting, the CBC presented Nixon with 61 recommendations for governmental action on topics such as education, housing, health, employment, and foreign policy. The CBC's bold and courageous actions in 1971 set the tone for its future role as a force for change and justice in Congress and beyond. Today, the CBC has grown to 56 members, making it the largest caucus in Congress. The CBC continues to advocate for policies and legislation that promote BIDEA and address the challenges and opportunities facing the Black community and the nation as a whole. As we celebrate Black History Month, let us remember and honor the legacy of the CBC and its founding members, especially Charles C. Diggs Jr., who paved the way for generations of Black leaders and activists. Let us also commit to supporting and amplifying the voices and visions of Black people in our workplaces and communities and fostering a culture of belonging and inclusion for everyone. #BlackHistoryMonth #BIDEA #CBC #Belonging = #Inclusion * (#Diversity + #Equity) ^ #Accessibility

Juneteenth is not just Black history; it is American history. It is a celebration of freedom, opportunity, equity, and access. We honor #Juneteenth not only through recognition but also as an opportunity to learn and grow as a company. This week, our Black Employee Network Employee Resource Group will host a panel discussion, Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom and Resilience, for the entire firm exploring the history and lasting impact of Juneteenth while also addressing the current landscape of diversity, equity, and inclusion. In addition to honoring and celebrating the remarkable strides and achievements of the Black community, we will provide resources for community members and allies who want to learn more and take action to promote positive change and progress. We encourage everyone to learn more about Juneteenth's significance, the complex history of the struggles faced by the Black community, and how to get involved in progressing equality in and outside the workplace.
