We are so grateful that, for a second year in a row, the The GardenWorks Project generously installed a vegetable garden for our residents! As we know from the success of last year's garden, gardening can be a beacon of hope and a path to recovery along one's healing journey. 🌻 Cultivating Resilience and Growth: Gardening allows survivors to regain a sense of control over their lives. Witnessing the growth and transformation of plants can serve as a powerful metaphor for survivors' own healing journeys. Just as seeds sprout and flourish, survivors can find inspiration and reassurance of their own capacity to heal and thrive. 🌻 Empowering Mind-Body Connection: A wholesome diet can foster a strong mind-body connection, helping survivors reconnect with their bodies and develop a positive relationship with food. By listening to their bodies' cues, survivors can honor their nutritional needs and practice self-care through mindful eating. 🌻 Community and Support: Gardening in community can provide a sense of belonging and understanding. Connecting with fellow survivors or like-minded individuals creates a supportive network, where experiences can be shared and the healing journey can be strengthened together. Let us celebrate the transformative power of gardening as a healing tool for survivors. May the seeds reflect the resilience and renewal within themselves. Together, let us create a garden of hope, love, and growth, where survivors can bloom into their fullest potential. Every year DarioHealth hosts a volunteer day for employees. An opportunity to get out in your community, connect, and serve. I was presented with a unique invitation to speak at Pasadena City College to a horticulture class. The Professor found me on LinkedIn as a result of my writing about gardening. She invited me to speak about our flower farm: - how we got started - what we grow - what we've learned But to me the flowers are just content. A conduit to a much deeper, more important conversation. ______________ The human connection between nature and our own mental health. Our landscape is either thriving with biodiversity, color and new blooms. Or it's in need of some major TLC. Our gardens are a work in progress. A daily process that involves: - weeding - watering - sunshine - organic matter - movement, etc So instead of talking at the class about how my husband and I have optimized drip systems or how to grow sunflowers, I dove into how planting a garden has supported my mental health, and how they can get started too. We have become so disconnected from nature, to the point where we see ourselves as entirely separate. I recognize we have to work extra hard during the long winter months to stay connected. - invest in a houseplant - visit an indoor park or pool - bundle up and hit the slopes - read a book about nature - prepare a meal with whole food ingredients I'm not here to present all the scientific research, however there are no shortage of studies and positive outcomes. I just know that this experience has surprised me and I FEEL better, and that's enough for me to keep passing along this message. As we approach the end of the academic year, I sit in my garden musing over our practice and the children who are moving on to school... Have we done enough...? And as I sit, I spot this single flower on my honeysuckle and well up... I have spent two years nurturing this plant. Two years of checking in, two years of moving it around the garden, adjusting the environment, adding extra fertiliser, hoping and worrying about it because, despite my best efforts, it never seemed to blossom. I read up on what honeysuckle needs and was surprised to see that it's a pretty hardy plant. Why, oh why, did mine not thrive? At last, after months of changing the garden and creating what should be the ideal environment, I took a leap of faith and planted it in the ground. Hoping beyond hope that it was enough. The honeysuckle grew a little...but it had nothing on any of my other plants which blossomed and bore fruits (some of them literally). But today, of all days, there suddenly appeared a flower! And I am reminded that childcare, like gardening, is a game of patience. Of love and nurture. Of adjusting the environment to suit the plant, not the other way around. It's an act of conscious non-comparison. And it is knowing that those who come to rejoice in the flowers will likely not remember all that work that helped it grow. It's #NationalWeedYourGardenDay! Not only do weeds in your front beds and visible gardens rob your flowers and plants of the sunlight and nutrients they need to stay healthy, but they also impact your home's curb appeal and the overall beauty of your community. Some pro tips to help make weeding the garden less of a chore: 🌿 Use a hose to wet the ground in the bed - it makes it easier to pull them by hand 🌿Catch them early while they're small and before they start flowering/seeding so they don't reseed the ground that surrounds them and pop back up 🌿Also, make sure you get the full weed - all the way down to the root. You may need to invest in a special garden tool like a weed popper or hand tiller 🌿Once you're done weeding, mulch acts as a great preventative measure to keep them from growing back! 🌿Devote a few minutes every day to weeding your garden instead of making it a big, overwhelming task every few months.
