From Digital TV Europe: #Disney CEO Bob Iger is exploring the future of its #lineartv assets such as #ABC, #FX and #NatGeo, admitting that they “may not be core” to the business. Iger said that Disney is being “open-minded and #strategic about the future of those businesses”, with #privateequityfirms – some of which are already invested in local linear operations in the #US – providing one potential group of #buyers. “They may not be core to Disney. There is clearly #creativity and #content they create that is core to Disney, but the #distribution model and the #businessmodel that forms the underpinning of that business – and that has delivered great #profits over the years – is definitely broken. [...] Iger picked out #sports network #ESPN as a different case that continues to perform, but added that he has been surprised by the speed of the #decline of #linear over recent years. [...] The CEO’s comments came a day after it emerged Disney is exploring the future of its #Indian #TV and #streaming business, with a sale or the addition of a #jointventure partner among options being considered.

The era of “Peak TV” is over as Hollywood begins cutting back. Huge investments in content for streamers eventually lead to corporate mergers, cost-cutting strategies and job losses. The largesse wasn't going to last and will be felt all the way down to commercial production. Have faith. When content is good, audiences will come. 🚨New Insight: Sky and HBOs Relationship Looks Set to Evolve Further Sky currently benefits from a highly lucrative output deal with Warner Bros. Discovery in key European territories, granting Sky exclusive first window rights to HBO content. However, as US studios make strategic shifts in their windowing strategies to monetise content, Warner plans to let its lucrative deals with Sky expire in order to bring HBO Max to markets like the UK, Germany and Italy in 2026. The gap left in Sky's content offerings, will leave a partnership opportunity for distributors to jump on. For buyers, the Warner/Sky deal expiry may increase competition in Germany's content market, making it harder for other services to compete with Sky. The latest data from Showlabs, shows that Peak TV is thriving! Major studios are increasing their spending on productions, and preliminary financial reports and forecasts indicate a return on investment in content. Although Disney is still grappling with broader financial issues, other major studios are showing rising expenditures on original productions. The year 2024 is shaping up to be a record year for investments in new content, second only to 2022. We are excited about what the future holds!
