Why have a race plan and why should you stick to it? After tapering for a race, you have more energy. Add to that the excitement of race day and standing next to faster athletes at the start and it's very easy to go out faster than you've planned. A first try at long distance Last week, Gilles Baechler took part to the UTMR 4STAGE race, a 4 days stage race around Monte Rosa, for a total of 170km and 11 000m+ on very tough terrain (technical, high altitude, really steep). The focus was put on this race the whole season for Gilles, with several big blocs of training, striking 3-4 big sessions in a row (like after Sierre Zinal, where Gilles had to log 3 hard trainings in the following days, before being able to rest). The race strategy was rather simple: being patient, staying conservative in all the downhills, as such a format won't let you perform with too sore muscles, and fueling in big quantity. Gilles perfectly executed everything, with a close to perfection pace management, which let him take the 11th position of the race, 9th male, with an excellent cumulative time of 27h14. The fall months mean more races are starting to appear on the calendar, whether it’s a target marathon, HS cross country season or the local 5k. In addition to serving as the reward for all your preparation, racing also allows you to test yourself and your limits. After a race, you should always reflect and frame the outcome with a few important questions: - what did I do well in my race? - what did my race reveal about where I need more focus? - how will this race help me improve for the next race/goal on my schedule? It’s always helpful to have the positives outweigh the negatives, so enjoy the challenge of racing and allow each experience to serve as motivation!
