PayPal has named senior Intuit executive Alex Chriss president and CEO, replacing Dan Schulman. Chriss, currently EVP and general manager of Intuit's small business and self-employed group, takes on the PayPal job in September, when he will also join the board. His appointment comes after a months-long search for a successor to Schulman, who announced his plan to retire in February after an eight year stint that began as the firm split from eBay. Last year PayPal missed revenue, adjusted operating margin and net new active users targets, prompting Schulman's pay to fall by 32%. As it faces up to a tough economic climate, the company has been looking to cut costs and enter new areas, including through the recent launch of its own stablecoin. PayPal could have talked about how they are a safe online payment option or how they integrate with existing infrastructure, but instead, they created trust with a series of short stories based on demonstrating the truth of their ubiquity, and they are delightfully focused! "Peter Thiel used to insist at PayPal that every single person could only do exactly one thing. Every single person at the company rebelled because it's so unnatural. At every other company, people want to do multiple things--especially as you get more senior... you feel like it's insulting to be asked to do just one thing. But Peter would enforce this pretty strictly. He'd basically say: 'I will not talk to you about anything else except for this one thing that I've assigned to you. I don't want to hear about how great you're doing in this other area. Just focus until you conquer this one problem.'... The insight behind this is that most people will solve problems that they understand how to solve. Roughly speaking, they will solve B+ problems instead of A+ problems. A+ problems are high-impact problems for your company but they're difficult--you don't wake up in the morning with a solution to them, so you tend to procrastinate...
