Kenworth unveiled the SuperTruck 2 at the Advanced Clean Transport expo in Las Vegas, achieving double the efficiency of their previous best truck.
The key factors are the vastly improved aerodynamics. The truck features a bullet-train-like design with a central cockpit offering a panoramic view, a narrowed nose, and a sloped forehead. It has low skirts, fully enclosed wheels, and slim camera stalks with night vision replacing traditional side mirrors. Variable-height suspension allows the truck to lower on smooth highways. Together, these changes reduce drag by 48%.
"We surpassed the performance of that model to improve efficiency by up to 136%. This was realized through a combination of improving fuel efficiency up to 12.8 mpg (18.4 L/100km) while reducing our combination weight by more than 7,000 pounds (3,175 kg). The result was the ability to haul more payload with an ultra-fuel-efficient tractor-trailer combination." says Kenworth GM Jim Walenczak in a press release.
By using advanced materials, design improvements, and lightweight, low-rolling-resistance tires, the design team significantly reduced the truck's weight. The SuperTruck 2, including its trailer, weighs 26,100 lb (11,839 kg), which is 7,100 lb (3,221 kg) lighter than before.
