I’m really looking forward to the upcoming AHSPO conference in Lorne in mid-August https://lnkd.in/gPhu4Mfg Brett Henderson and I have attended the last few conferences as we engaged in a hospital supply chain project, helping to improve the capability and collaboration between suppliers and the purchasing departments in the hospital supply chains. It is impressive to see so many suppliers attend these events and purchasing managers share developments in the supply chain. Recently the BioMelbourne Network hosted an event focused on supporting more local manufacturers in health procurement. During Covid, importing became really difficult. I witnessed a number of my clients really step up to meet shortfalls in supply by increasing their manufacturing capability to support hospitals during the Covid crisis, in several instances taking mortgages to fund the cash flow shortfall that demand created. It is really positive that there is a Victorian Government initiative (Australian Medtech Manufacturing Centre AMMC) https://lnkd.in/gUfkbxdV focused on building local content in health procurement. One barrier that will be difficult to break is the continual focus on driving price down in the supply chain without considering the value created in marginally more expensive locally produced items. Often the quality of local product is much better than imported alternatives, yet rather than understanding and measuring the value of Australian product we are returning to focus on price and poorer quality imports at the expense of local manufacturers who supported us during the difficult time of Covid. Let’s hope we can start building strategies and tactics to engage all participants in building local content in health procurement during AHSPO.
