You probably shouldn't brainstorm like the McElroy brothers. Since 2010, the year's first episode of the McElroys' podcast, My Brother, My Brother and Me, has been the brothers brainstorming a theme for the year ahead. It's always entertaining - but always in a bit of a cringe way. The process makes me laugh but it also sounds SO painful. Now in a way, you can't argue with the results. Like I say, the episodes are entertaining for us, the audience, and sometimes the process yields a solid gold banger of a theme, like this year's: https://lnkd.in/e2MR5xtq But if you want to do a brainstorm at work? And you're doing it to get useful ideas, NOT primarily to entertain an audience? And you're doing it with colleagues or clients, NOT with your beloved brothers who you know still love you even as they shoot down your every pitch? Here are some things the McElroys regularly do in these episodes that you absolutely should NOT emulate: 💡 Generate and critique ideas all at once: these are two separate processes and you need a different mindset for each one. When you do both at once, people hold back potentially useful ideas for fear of having them shot down. 🚫 Dismiss ideas out of the gate: when we brainstorm at Definition, we write down every single idea offered. It's less "there are no bad ideas" and more "even a bad idea can set someone else on a train of thought to a good one". So no judgement or filtering: just a full and complete record of everything generated. 🗣️ Over-explain ideas: again, because the brothers are critiquing the ideas as they come out, they feel they have to robustly justify every idea they offer. And again, this leads to potentially useful ideas being held in reserve instead of being aired, because the person with the idea can't think of how to explain it. When we brainstorm, all anyone's allowed to speak aloud is their ideas. No explanations or justifications, no critiques or responses (even positive ones!). You say an idea and it gets written down. So, what do you think of this year's theme? And what's been your best or worst brainstorming experience?
