Software Engineer

I've finally retired. After a crazy number of years as a software engineer, it's time for me to just have fun. The last 7 years at Amazon have been great, despite COVID-19 and industrial craziness. I've got a long list of side projects to plough through. It'll be fun.

Happy retirement, James! I often share with my colleagues the story of our meeting at SAP Palo Alto offices a few years ago. As I recall, our teams were collaborating on edge computing when you were tasked with delivering an unexpected and difficult update. Despite the challenging situation, you handled it with such professionalism and authenticity that it became clear why you had came down personally. Both sides were able to quickly move forward, working together on the communication roll-out that followed. Afterward, in your usual unassuming and down-to-earth manner, you walked with me from the conference room to the cafe at the other end of our building, helping me carry the used coffee mugs back to the sink. It was a true teachable moment!. It is not just about what we have accomplished in life, but how we show up every day that truly matters! All my very best, James!

I hope your retirement is as fun as mine! But if it is, it won't seem much like a retirement - I have never been this busy with so many challenging projects, the only change is that no one tells me what to do and I rarely get paid much, if anything.

Thanks won't be enough to express my gratitude. Java has been my core strength for ~17 years now. Without you and other pioneers and tech stalwarts, I wouldn't be in a position like I am in now. Happy retirement and have fun, Dear Mr. James Gosling God bless you and all of us 🙏

I just love the matter-of-fact manner in which you announced your retirement. No pompous blathering of your impact and no mention of any of your accomplishments that literally changed the world of computer programming 😀 What a legend! And to think that it's exactly 30 years since Java was introduced to the world! So along the lines of the Java slogan ("write once, run anywhere"), may I say "compile once, relax everywhere"!! Your contributions had a significant impact on this world! Wish you a long, healthy and fun filled retirement sir!

Enjoy retirement James! It was an honor to meet you in person a few years ago. I first started with Java back in 1997 with a Berkeley CS class, creating a Towers of Hanoi program. Who knew the world woujd still be using Java today. I still have that 1.1 SDK. May need to run it on my Sparc 20 one of these days.

Thanks to you for creating the wonderful and platform independent programming language called Java. This programming language changed my life. Due to this programming language, I gave up my career from becoming a C/C++ programmer to Java programmer on a happy note. :) Never regretted a single moment since working from last 6 years as a Java programmer. When it comes to enterprise, Java is still the king, no doubt. No one can beat Java. I wrote a small Java program for you. I hope this makes you happy. public class Farewell { public static void main(String...args) { System.out.println("Happy Farewell and Retirement to the best programmer, Sir James Gosling...."); } }

James Gosling You fundamentally shaped 21st Century Computing. Your presence on Sun Tech Days stage used to be monumental and fun ☺️ as you used to say Real Engineers are fun to hang out with Software will always remain a collection of small little things and Java is needed to stitch them all together Have Fun and Enjoy Your Retirement James https://youtu.be/m2c-Tji4h-k?si=pe88kyTu-p4bR0uA
