I am so impressed by the team behind FIREBRAND PBC, one of our local suppliers in Oakland, California. I had a chance to meet Matt Kreutz, founder and CEO of Firebrand, an artisan bread company with the goal of making a positive impact in the community. Firebrand hires people with barriers to employment like homelessness or previous incarceration and offers a living wage, financial literacy and other programs to offer support and development. Recently, Matt welcomed me and 15 Team Members to his bakehouse to learn more about his business - and to put us to work! We layered ham and cheese on dough, rolled baguettes and slashed the top of yeasty loaves as the bread baked. Matt even let us try our hands with a mechanical press to make the large, thin slabs of butter that create the flakey layers in croissants and puff pastries. A highlight was seeing the massive, imported wood fire oven, which bakes their famous bread. I want to share my gratitude with Matt and his team for generously hosting us, nourishing us, and showing us how investing in employees pays off for the community. #TeamWFM #IntheFieldWFM
