There’s a trend now towards hiring only 𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘳 PMs / engineers / designers. Younger people bring energy and new ideas and speed. Yes, “trust but verify,” but mentor rather than micromanage. A mixed team with great talent outperforms five stolid old-timers.

I firmly believe that anyone who ascribes to the “first who then what” model is obligated to have invested in a robust protocol for training and mentoring the people they hire regardless of their age. Too often, the decision to hire junior level people is a financially driven decision and based on the hope that “hunger” will drive them to success. With a few notable exceptions this has almost always proven to be untrue in my experience. I love the energy, insight, and talent that younger people bring. I also love seeing leaders who are committed to setting those same people up for success.

I think after all the pushes of the tech three week programs a lot of companies found out that they don’t have the fundamental infrastructure for raising talent through the ranks. It’s always a lot easier (in theory) just hiring an outside person to do a job that’s already at a level rather than bringing younger talent up.

They also do the work the older timers don’t want to do. Which still needs to get done.

Bringing young people that can learn from senior people is also a smart investment. Every senior professional should be a mentor part of his/her time.

There is also the trend of NOT hiring older folks because of the classic tech agism problem, especially in engineering. Like with any system, you need some diversity to see how well it works.
