A little background on the name: At the heart of our name is VMG which stands for Velocity Made Good. In sailboat racing VMG measures how fast a competing boat is headed towards its desired destination. Accounting for changes to the wind, current, sail handling, and course VMG provides a critical feedback loop to optimize performance. As in sailboat racing, businesses need this same feedback loop to prompt adjustments and ensure their objectives are achieved as efficiently as possible. This tool helps concentrate efforts on the most important priorities. 🔸 Meeting Pulse: Implement the Meeting Pulse, including the 90-minute weekly Level 10 Meeting, Quarterlies, and Annuals. This ensures your leadership team focuses on important weekly priorities and starts solving the right problems. 🔸 Scorecard: Develop a Scorecard as your fourth tool. Consider these four steps to operationalize your strategy: 1. Set SMART Operational Goals: Begin by translating your strategic objectives into 1-year operational goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. These goals should be cross-functional, aligning all departments and roles to steer your organization toward its strategic vision. 2. Pressure-Test Your Goals: Evaluate the main risks and opportunities for each goal by brainstorming with your team. Strategy is a term that often perplexes individuals at the outset of their career, especially those in roles like Product Management or entrepreneurship. However, with experience, I have come to grasp the core of what strategy truly entails. Interpreting Strategy: Strategy can be condensed into a collection of hypotheses or decisions that determine a course of action. It functions within a triad of principles: Vision: The "Why" behind the endeavor. Mission: The "What" that needs to be achieved. Strategy: The "How" detailing the approach. For example, Microsoft's vision of placing a computer in every home and on every desk could have led them to manufacture computers. Instead, they opted to develop operating systems and software. Similarly, Google's mission to make the world's information accessible and useful did not lead them to organize tangible goods or people. They chose to organize websites. Benefits of a Clear Strategy: A well-articulated strategy facilitates organizations and teams in several ways: Ensuring comprehension of the underlying principles. Aligning everyone toward common goals. Enabling prioritization. Generating operational leverage. Aiding in delivering high-impact outcomes. Defining a Winning Strategy: Historically, strategy has often been tied to the notion of victory. Here's how a comprehensive winning strategy might be described: Comprises a collection of specific hypotheses or choices. Furnishes a clear direction for team execution. Builds on profound insights and an understanding of capabilities and limitations. Aims to satisfy customers through distinct differentiation. Establishes a robust defense in the market. Focuses on capturing significant value, while considering potential downsides. Ultimately facilitates the sustainable attainment of an ambitious vision or mission. Applying Strategy Across Functions: This framework can be tailored for various functional levels, including Products, Marketing, Operations, Finance, HR, etc. Strategies should ideally be structured around 3 to 5 pillars, ensuring they are easily communicable and retainable. Timeframe and Review: Strategies can be relevant for a period ranging from 2 to 5 years, depending on industry nuances. Regular reviews are vital to assess the effectiveness and make necessary adjustments. The Challenge of Strategy: While comprehending strategy and learning the associated frameworks might be straightforward, the real challenge lies in making demanding choices and being accountable for them, especially when the stakes are high. Building this capability requires practicing progressively more challenging decisions to hone the ability to discern winning strategies and the fortitude to carry them out amid rising uncertainty. It is reflected in one of Amazon's leadership principles: "Leaders are right a lot."
