We lost $20k selling our first product It was a variety snack box of unhealthy snacks No differentiation and we weren't the cheapest But we didn't give up We niched down and created the #1 selling Keto snack box on Amazon It was something we were passionate about And we were successful because we brought value to the market I think that foundation has contributed to making Nectar so successful so quickly My business partners and I know what it takes to source products, bring them to market, get consumers to buy, and scale We also know how bad it hurts to lose a boatload of money As we've scaled our agency, we have made a concerted effort to ensure that our team adopts the never-quit mentality And that they treat our client partners' businesses like they are our businesses Plus, we always try to do what's right even when it isn't easy or convenient P.S. I'm all in favour of enhancing effective competition in the groceries market. But the state financially assisting a new entrant is dead wrong. The state already has an Act to maintain the competitive process. The Commerce Act 1986, our antitrust law, just needs to be vigorously enforced. I'll give the new Grocery Commissioner a decent go before offering my assessment. But, a priori, the real key to effective competition is more competitors, not a bureaucrat micro-managing terms of supply etc. If new entrants cannot be enticed to start up in our small 5.2m market, the existing duopoly could be broken up into smaller enterprises. Every time I go to the grocery store to "get my steps in" I buy some crap. Just a drink for the trip back. Some chips for movie night. There's a new Red Bull flavor!? Come to papa. Result: – 180 calories burned – 600 calories of crap food bought – 40 mins lost (per day) Here's a better way: Shop online. – no more temptation of crap food – save 2-3 hours per week – save money You can still get your steps in. But use that time for creative thinking. Not a mega time-waster like grocery shopping. PS.: Summer edition is cool, but nothing can beat coconut-blueberry Red Bull. Any argument is invalid, sorry.

Next time you’re in California, go to Peet’s Coffee. Because they’re stupid. Peet’s is the stupid coffeeshop that, to get and keep more customers, developed a really stupid loyalty scheme. It wasn’t like everybody else’s professional ‘card-stamp’ loyalty scheme. It was stupid because it ignored the competition completely. In fact, it was so stupid, Peet’s scheme was the exact opposite of their scheme. They called it, ‘Peet’s Coffee DISLOYALTY Scheme’. Idiots. Basically, ‘Peet’s Coffee Disloyalty Scheme’ would take and stamp ANY coffee shops loyalty card. Four words from me. Simple. Utter. Blibbing. Genius. One lesson. Think stupid. Be wary of coupons and BOGO deals. It can be tempting to go for the 2-for-1 purchase, but if this item wasn’t on your list, you’re not saving anything! Coupons generally require you to purchase two things to get a discount, so again, you’re spending more than planned just to get that ‘bargain.’ When you go food shopping, make a list and try to set a budget beforehand. Don’t fall for all the gimmicks.

I have been working with a food and beverage company recently who turned down buyer intros because they didn’t feel they were ready and it’s one of the smartest decisions I’ve seen. Having a great product is important but being able to support the brand and the retailer is critical.   Buyers and retailers are extremely picky, difficult, and finicky.  If you’re UPCs aren’t perfect, they might not put you on the shelf. If you can’t handle a net 120 payment, you might find it difficult to continue supply. If your product doesn’t have the right margin, you will find you might not get in. If you don’t do everything right, the deal might not go through.   Work with people (like ourselves) who know the tics and tricks of dealing with buyers.   #foodandbev #cpg #cpgfounders
