I was reminded of this article from a couple of years ago recently which makes the bold claim that we can lower drug prices without affecting innovation. The core contention is that the price reductions are targeted toward big pharma, but that big pharma isn't the source of most innovation now, so no harm no foul from an innovation perspective. Bad thinking about how systems work is common, so it's not a surprise that this seemingly well-researched article is fatally flawed. It's true that a very high percentage of innovation starts in smaller organizations, but you have to think through why investors fund that. If there weren't an opportunity for strong returns when big pharma acquires that innovation, the business case for those investments would get a lot worse. Slicing up the ecosystem in the way these authors do is a classic economic mistake where they seem to assume that keeping the incidence on big pharma will keep the burden there.
